But what use is that unless the intention is to buy another CPU next year that matches/beats the 9900K. Which negates the value argument.

Perhaps I should make some outlandish claim that this means the 9900K is actually cheaper! But that would be misleading.

The 2700x is a great chip...the 9900k is faster

That’s why I bought it...I was running a 6700k and a 2700x would have been a side grade for me in games...

I did the research...if the 2700x was worth it over the 6700k when Ryzen was released I would have gone Ryzen. But there was no compelling reason to upgrade.The 8700k 6/12 didn’t even temp me as I had a 6/12 Xeon before.The only reason I upgraded to a 9900k was I got £400 for my 6700k mobo combo while it still had value.

And it was a 8/16 chip that I can potentially run at 5ghz on all cores. Thus destroying the 2700x

So I bought a 9900k...

It’s that simple really.

How on earth did you get £400 for the 6700k and mobo?

. 6700K's seem to go for £120 or thereabouts and rough guess £80 for the mobo. Am tempted to upgrade my 6700K system and £200 max was all I was expecting to get?

Well I sold my 6700K for £205 and the Z170 motherboard for £95.

I think they are making the point that you can get more than £200 for the mobo cpu combo and that from their experience £300 is realistic so £400 may be possible.

I was wondering more along the lines of where, without paying huge fees. £200+ for a 6700K, used, potentially 3 years old sounds ludicrous considering what you can get new

I used the usual auction website. Just wait until it is a £1 max fee weekend. They tend to be every other weekend. The in demand Intel chips do hold their value well. It helps if you still have the retail box and some manufacturer warranty remaining.

A 6700k overclocked to 4.7ghz is a desirable chip. Even at stock boost of 4.2ghz.

Not a lot has been happening in the cpu arena with 8700k being close to £400 6700k still punches with the more expensive chips

They are simply pushing it too far again another year ahead on my 4770k by the time i get a good priced upgrade it will be 2021. And by then if i am forced to pay this obscene amount at least it will be noticed in gaming.

I forsee a period of opportunity for AMD if they can grab the angry thrifty gamer.
