What watch do you wear?

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated :)
I must admit some of the luxury watches do look very very nice, but unfortunately a little out of my price range at the moment (especially at 20K lol)... Perhaps if bitcoin makes another surge ;)

The luxury watch market is similar to the used high end car market. People go crazy for dis-continued models which sends the price sky high. e.g. Used Patek Philippe 5711's are currently selling for about £50k, when new they were £30k - go figure
Likewise some models you can't buy, even if you have the cash !! As you will have needed to spend £xxk per year from that AD to get access to them.

It's a trait found in many items.

Try find late 50's Gibson Les Paul, you are talking about £100,000 for a guitar and it will be bashed, dented, paint faded and it is all desirable. The older it looks the more history it has the more it's worth. Add a zero to it if it's one played by one of the rock legends. When compared to a new one for about £3,000 and i bet in a song, you won't be able to tell which is which.

Brand new Patek 5711's were readily available for circa £16K just 4 or so years ago when I bought mine. Things have really changed since then.

Seiko are generally regarded as a great choice in the smaller budget category :)

Luxury watches are priced by their desirability.
A Rolex Daytona which sells for double list price (if you don't have a relationship with a Rolex Approved Dealer, approx £20k), is no more accurate than a Seiko costing less than £1k.
The high cost is linked to it's history (Paul Newman and Motor Racing) which makes it very desirable and with Rolex controlling the supply (very limited) adds to the frenzy around them.

Well, it kinda is more accurate. You'll find a modern Rolex will sit about +/- 1 second a day and they will guarantee up to +/- 2 seconds a day. A Seiko doesnt get near that, even Grand Seiko would be really hard pushed to match. My £900 PADI is about 6 seconds fast per day for instance.

Spot on with the cost though. Daytona ceramics, BLNRs, LVs etc all go for silly money and been on the rise for the past couple of years.

It really can't continue. It's getting quite ridiculous now. The way it's going, it's going to pop any time soon, a bit like supercar values have the last month or two. Is there a way I can short the luxury watch market?

My Steinhart with a ETA movement is doing less than a minute over a 3 month period.

Well done, but thats not guaranteed nor indicative across the board. My ETA 7753 based Tudor chrono is out by about 3 seconds a day and Tudor dont guarantee anything beyond COSC.

My rolex blows me away. Never serviced and I rarely set it. Never seems more than under 2 mins over and I set it months ago. Keep it on a winder.

Folks is the Seiko 5 range still the best value under ~£150?

I've been wearing an Apple watch for the past couple of years - mainly because the functions were really useful for my job. I've now changed roles and no longer need (or want) to be contacted 24/7, so I'm looking for a nice reliable non-smartwatch.
