Should a 97 year old man be driving on a public road?

IMO.

Everyone over 60 should require re-testing
Everyone over 70 should require re-testing every 5 years.
Everyone over 80 should require re-testing every 2 years.
Everyone over 90 should require re-testing every year.

If you're still sharp and can drive to a sufficient standard to pass a driving test, I don't have a problem with a 100 year old on the road. But if you're no longer capable - you need removing before you cause an accident. This is probably long before you'd choose yourself to give up driving.

Well there is a retest system here, where if a person states you are not fit to be driving you can ask for a DVLA test, where the instructor sits beside you, watches you drive for a period, not a full test, more a behaviour and process test, and declares if you can retain your licence or not.
I wonder if this should become compulsory at an age.
 
He'd of been fine and the accident wouldn't of happened if he'd been in a proper Land Rover and not one of these new fangled plasticky ones. (Accident wouldn't of happened 'cos he's still of been 10 minutes from the junction when the other car was there :) )

I'm more amazed he was driving himself, thought he'd of had a chauffeur.

Given we can't teach and select decent 18 year olds to drive properly how do you think that will work?
I'd suggest that under 60's weren't allowed on the roads. Also we need a minmum speed limit on main roads, anyone not up to that should be banned.

Mandatory retesting for everyone every 10 years when you renew your test.

Some drivers are absolutely shocking, and I don't think age really matters.

It is a depressing sign of the times when the country can no longer afford to provide a chauffeur for a retired Diplomat.

God knows, this wouldn't happen even in Greece!


ps - I gather that the people in the other FOREIGN manufactured car were two WOMEN - Shocking, just shocking!

What would that nice Mr. Wineshop have to say about this outrageous assault on an entirely innocent elderly gentleman by a couple of Harpies?

He was breathalysed and not found to be under the influence and so was the other driver.

Its not about age it's about ability blaa blaa blaa. Jesus why do I reply to these threads, it's just obvious.

Age has nothing to do with it. It is about competence to drive.

Maybe stick this in Motors. I don't think this subject has yet had its annual discussion there...

Its good point my stepfather is what, 88? 89 this year? And he still drives. And frankly I'm quite happy with his driving though he could do with giving cyclists more clearance. My mother though ten years younger I didn't trust her driving 30 years ago and frankly I wouldn't want her driving at all now.
