Are India and Pakistan about to have another showdown?

Reports of Indian and Pak troops engaged in heavy skirmishes and fire fights at Sialkot which is in Punjab, not Kashmir. If true, sounds like it could be spreading.

Been sporadic exchanges of gun fire (at significant range) a bit more generally than Kashmir but I've not so far heard of any serious direct fighting so far.

I would think India would win in an all out conflict as long as it doesn't drag on, but the size of forces on both sides would make an all out conflict a catastrophe. Pakistan probably has more allies to call on with ideologically similar views which might have an impact - hopefully will calm down pretty quick

Will never amount to anything. Indias armed forces have very close links to Russia and Israel whilst the China is a big backer of the Pakistanis and the new belt and road initiative. The limp that is the US at present and West won't generally get involved so I'd expect Putin and Xing to be picking up the phone to their counterparts to chill things. I could imagine flare up skirmishes around the LoC and in Kashmir but nothing further South.

I don't think a clear cut victory (ignoring nuclear potential) is there for either side - India might militarily have the upper hand especially in terms of being able to resupply and manpower but an advance into Pakistan would favour the defenders heavily and Pakistan does have a lot of experience with guerilla warfare, etc. to draw on.

The thing is which other major player will back Pakistan other than China. As for the Arab nations I wouldn't expect many to get involved. Iran and India also have very close ties as India are a major importer of their oil.

All out conflict will never happen but even relatively contained conflicts along the border will be disastrous when you consider the sizes of eahh of their armed forces.

I don't think it would take much for Middle Eastern countries to throw some assistance at one the world's largest Muslim countries - but hopefully I'm wrong

Those in a position to either have significant commercial interests with India or are fighting their own battles and probably wouldn't want to spare the resources.

The timing is a bit bad in that respect for Pakistan, at other points in time they'd have probably had more support from that direction.

EDIT: Just scanning down the list I think Jordan is the only country who might give them some significant level of support but they definitely wouldn't get involved in any conflict directly.

I never realised until I met my wife just how much India and Pakistan hate each other. But this does seem to be stepping up to a new level of tension.

They do not hate each other. In all honesty, most of the Indians do not hate Pakistanis and vice versa.

Kashmir should have been a matter sorted out decades ago, but greed has played a major part.

I have always expected tensions to rise between the two political governments but what has occurred isn’t the answer.

First strike from India
Ball is in Pakistan Court
Possible solution is for Britain to get involved in talks.
