What film did you watch last night?

Hellboy (2019) - 2/10

Gory and silly and very tongue in cheek, but not that fun or enjoyable to watch.

The plot is weak and a weird mix of English folklore and comic book adventure which wasn’t very good or interesting.

Poor editing, obvious continuity errors, hit and miss acting and some of the special effects and CGI looked really cheap.

The creature art was really good in a disturbing way and I did like the use of the different mythical creatures, but it wasn’t funny or particularly memorable.

Little (2019) - 2/10

Boring and not funny in the slightest, and it’s all been done better before.

The plot fits far too much in, jumping from scene to scene almost at random, and the scenes are an odd mix, none of which have any real payoff.

The story does have a good moral and the chemistry between the leads is OK, but none of the other characters have any development, and a lot of aspects raised are never resolved.

The Gunman -2/10

Utter rubbish. I had to stop watching as I found it that bad. Ray Winstone looks like he's gone to a Cosplay as a cross between The Big Lewbowski and an Afghan hound.

Agatha Christie - And Then There Were None 9/10

I missed this when aired on the BBC a couple of years ago. Very dark, an awesome cast and a plot which does make you guess.

I love a good whodunnit, growing up watching Poirot and the films (Murder on the Nile etc) and (as a youngster) the unhinged Jeremy Brett adaption of Holmes which remains to this day, the best.

John Carter - 5/10
Not as bad as I thought it would be, but doesn’t really have anything particularly positive going for it other than maybe the dog thing. Acting, cgi and story are all fairly lacklustre.

Nightcrawler

Finally got around to watching this. Thought it was absorbing and very well made. It's a difficult film to rate when all of the characters were unlikeable, but I thought Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo were both excellent.

7/10

Bridget Jones Baby - having never seen any of the Bridget Jones movies I sort of went into this blind but now I want to watch the others. A good light hearted British comedy.

The Nun - absolutely dire. How on earth this got any traction whatsoever amazes me. Glad I didn't see this at the cinema. Aside from it not being scary it just relied way too heavily on the quiet quiet JUMP method. As soon as you eealise this it's not scary in the slightest as you know within 10 seconds of it being quiet there will be some sort of "jump"

A Star is Born - my second viewing. And despite my friends talking all the bloody way through it. I still enjoyed it. I've got a new home cinema setup so I was watching it with Dolby Atmos and in 4k. Glorious. I nearly cried! Will watch again when my friends aren't around no doubt :)

Wild Rose - What a fantastic and well written film. About a young mother getting out of jail and wanting to go to Nashville as she is a Country singer. Filmed in Glasgow at the Grand Olde Oprey (We used to go there 40 years ago). Maryhill, Silverburn shopping centre and of course Nashville. The film is funny in places and real sad in other. The music is fantastic and Jessie Buckely is a brilliant singer. If you do not like Country music go and see it and you will change your mind. Whispering Bob (Radio Two) makes an appearance with his Country show. There is a wee bit filmed in Euston Station.

A few movies over the weekend.

Glass - a fitting end to the trilogy, a little short on spectacle toward the end but entirely fitting with the world in which these kind of heroes/villains live. - 7.5/10.

Aquaman - Lasted an hour before switching it off, it's Man Of Steel bad. I've enjoyed most of the DCEU movies but the CGI overload on this drove me crazy. A shame as I generally like Momoa in anything he's done and he's really good, just has nothing to work with. ?/10 as I didn't finish.

Escape Room - Clearly fitting into the Saw shape gap in the torture porn category. Sort of a Saw/Belko Experiment hybrid. I can see myself happily watching the sequels each year while rolling my eyes and delighting in the elaborate way people are despatched of. - 7/10.

I was disappointed with the Nun too. As you say it just wasn't scary and was a huge disappointment after i'd been looking forward to it.

I watched Mid90's on Saturday night. It's an excellent coming of age type film. I saw it referred to "Dazed and Confused in the 90's" and i can kind of see that. Was close to giving up after 5 minutes as it looked like it was going to be an arty pretentious type film which usually bore the crap out of me (hello The Night Eats the World) but i'm glad i stuck with it.

Interstella

Finally got round to watching this. Thought it was a let down to be honest, not to say its a bad film but just wasn't the masterpiece I've heard it to be.
Visually I expect the small screen does not do it justice.
Story wise I thought it could have missed some parts and went further with the final act.

I saw it at imax and thought it was rubbish...huge disappointment and some actually laugh at loud scenes that were meant to be serious...shame as I love space films...

Without opening the can of worms about Interstellar's story, I thought the score/music was absolutely superb. Cornfield Chase in particular chokes me up and I have no explanation why.

Agreed - The music on that movie was incredible.

I've seen it twice now, and thought it was a great movie - But it's too long :p
