BREAKING: Paris landmark, Notre Dame Cathedral, is on fire!

Very sad news but at least a ton of money has been pledged to help rebuild it, and no one was hurt or killed.

I shamefully chuckled at this meme though :o

If you have been to Notre Dame as i'm sure you have, was a great exhibition where is charts the changes over the decades and never really stays the same anyway.

EDIT - Seems like all 3 Rose windows have survived, yay! :)

Exactly, the edifice of most of the major Cathedrals are constantly evolving beasts. The buildings are older than the lifetimes of humans so they reflect those changing fashions each generation. :)

Honestly a part of me would find some grace in just planting some oaks in the cathedral and letting nature reclaim it.

It’d look alright and just spend the money on the environment instead.

So glad they saved so much of it, even the three rose windows are reported as surviving! It looks like it will be a restoration project rather than a rebuild, so that's a good thing.

Why the hell would you give a £5 million contract to restore something of such importance, to a small company run by a 32 year old with limited experience of working on such a monument? Surely you would want a more major firm involved, run by someone with far more experience. Its not like we're talking about fixing up grandmas shed.

Corruption?

Did Grayling act as a middleman in this deal? ;)

Corruption?

No idea.. I mean I know its a firm that's got history of working on some historical buildings, but that's in the companys past, when it was run by the former company heads. I know its run by a family but even so..if I was renovating something of such importance theres no way I would put it in the hands of someone just over 30 years of age. I understand that is pretty ageist of me, but some things imo, need an older head overseeing it.

Not putting the blame squarely at the firm involved, it may have still happened with anyone else, I'm just surprised that a national (global even?) monument would be put in the hands of someone so young.

I have not been involved over the years in saving millions by means of "creative" tax avoidance schemes - I wonder whether these people as they engage in a cynical PR exercise can claim the same?

They quite possibly do. Not sure what that has to do with any tax relief on a donation to help rebuild the Cathedral?

About that money....

Translation of the french bit:

"I urge Parliament to vote urgently a special provision opening a tax cut of 90% on the donations that will be made in favour of the Grand restoration site of Notre-Dame "
