BREAKING: Paris landmark, Notre Dame Cathedral, is on fire!

i've been looking at the pictures this morning of the aftermath and Thankfully it seems that it's not as bad as i feared. All the stonework seems to be solid and in place and at least one of the glass stained windows has survived pretty much intact. It'll take at least a decade but i can't see why it cannot be fully restored, the hardest part will be the central spire that collapsed

less than 24 hours after the blaze the authorities are discounting arson, wow, that's quick.

Unsurprisingly, there were posts on a U.S. forum I subscribe to, saying that the Paris firefighters were considering surrendering as a valid option.

Now, now, it's been a very long time since the French did any large scale surrendering.

Thing is the church wasn't closed at the time. The organist was being interviewed this morning. He said he was inside playing the organ for evening mass when the fire started and the fire alarms went off and then the building was evacuated.

He also said he couldnt see any smoke or smell anything so he remained in the building for 20 minutes after the public left before leaving himself.
that sounds odd. i'd have thought a fire alarm in a building like that would have triggered some massive investigation immediately, possibly had the alarm directly linked to a fire station. I thought the fire was a kinda big instantaneous(ish) thing, seems odd that an alarm went off them people were wandering about seeing/smelling nowt for 20 mins then the building's ablaze.

Do they not have insurance coverage for this thing? It’s owned by the French state and used by the Catholic Church both of which are perfectly capable of funding repairs.

You would think they would have insurance

The Catholic church is broke though from paying silence money to choir boys and paying off lawsuits for the boys who didn't keep their silence

So what? Doesn’t everyone? I’d assume you do too? (If you’re a taxpayer)
I have not been involved over the years in saving millions by means of "creative" tax avoidance schemes - I wonder whether these people as they engage in a cynical PR exercise can claim the same?
