Going on a cruise alone

Just to add we always cruise with Royal Caribbean as they cater towards a young crowd with things like drops slides, zip wires, bumper cars, laser tag, VR trampolines, surfing, sky diving tunnels etc.

I'm off on a 12 night med cruise in September for 825pp which I think is pretty good.

I have friends who have been on Scandinavian cruises and loved it. If it's something you want to do then just do it. Take a good camera with you and something planned to fill in the downtime. (Sorry to hear about your predicted surgery and hope it doesn't come to pass)

I've never cruised but I have worked in the industry. Single travelers are not uncommon, and you'll generally be sat on a large table for dinner.
I've been on holiday on my own, had a great time and met people from all over the world.

That’s a good price, would you say the included drinks and food are of good quality? I guess on the bigger ships it’s almost like a shopping mall with different types of restraunt on different days, with formal and informal settings, does the onboard store credit (royal Caribbean re promoting $50 free) just apply to premium brand drinks and the onboard shopping, guess this doesn’t go too far.

Is that departing from Southampton, is it cheaper to depart via Europe, I see they do USA options too.

The 825pp doesn't include drinks and is from Southampton. The quality of the food is good, you can pay a small service charge to go some of the speciality restaurants. One some of the newer ships (Quantum class I believe) they have a different dinning experience whereby you have lots of different restaurants you can go to all included.

I believe the onboard credit is simply taken from the room tab so you can spend it on anything on board.

It will generally be cheaper to go from Southampton, we always do since my wife doesn't like flying.

This is the one I booked earlier in the year when they had an offer - https://www.royalcaribbean.co.uk/itinerary-details/?itin=12U215&ship=ID&sail=20190902&room=Interior

To a single man with a limited circle of friends, a cruise alone sounds like an act of desperation.

To a married man with kids, a week's cruise alone sounds like heaven!

Seriously, just book it and find your way. :)

From my own extensive research, if you see Sandra Bullock and Willem Dafoe - GET THE HELL OFF THE SHIP!!!!!!! :D

Other than that, enjoy yourself!

Travelling on your own at any age is amazing and you will meet people 100%, a cruise though I'm not so sure, its mostly couples and grannies no? I might be wrong, if you really want to do it just go for it, whats to lose, a few quid. Personally i'd just go travelling and jump on some boats if you really want to be on the ocean, you will have far more options plus a lot cheaper and flexiable.

Actually reading through this now, single traveller cruise sounds decent if you limited for time. Just do it, beats sitting around wondering, whatever happens you will have an experience. Just do it, forget what others say.

... do ships now have full bandwidth wireless internet connections ? (can a satellite connection really deliver that)

Get off the internet!

That's one of the things i enjoyed most about my last cruise, the WiFi was so expensive, i didn't bother, i actually found it liberating knowing i couldn't get online, i embraced it and did other things instead!

yes - no sympathy for the insta|wapp|fbheads ....... but, there's 'legitimate' internet use to recce stop over locations, or coastline .....

On board cookery courses look an interesting social option, avoiding alcohol based activities,
checking - swimming pools seem a bit short 7m for useful exercise

Having been on a cruise I wouldnt recommend anyone goes on one. They are so dull I nearly jumped overboard to make it more entertaining

Just like hotels, there are rubbish ones.
Except you can leave a crap hotel and enjoy the scenery. Being stuck on a boat with geriatrics or snivelling children, forced to take small talk at dinner and paying ridiculous prices for a drink was my idea of hell. Only tried it cause the other half is terrified of flying. Never again.
