Have you swapped out the cable yet?

Updated the NIC drivers?

Is it 1000 Mbit / full duplex as reported in ncpa.cpl?

So haven't swapped the cable....but as I said the MBP is quite happy to report speeds of 550 Mbps so I figure the cable is more than up to the job.

Updated both NIC drivers (Intel and E2400 Killer drivers) after uninstalling the NICs first. (It is a Gigabyte Z170x Gaming 7 board). The Intel software reports full duplex at 1 Gbps to the SH3.

Also tried the following in Win10:

1. Closed peer to peer updates (adjusted Win10 bandwidth to 0% it can use in the background)
2. Disabled Window Auto-tuning
3. Updated chipset drivers from Intel for the Mboard
4. Turned off all firewalls (software)
5. Released and renewed IP address
6. Tried switching between Intel and E2400 and testing on fast.com - same result
7. Killed as many background processes as I dared...same result (capped at 350 Mbps).

Things left to do:
1. Linux Live
2. Boot into safe mode and check speed

So you've gone through all of that but you haven't done a test with a different ethernet cable to your PC to determine if that is the fault?
Well yes I have used the same cable on a different computer and the cable is capable of 550 Mbps...I thought that was fairly clear from my previous post?!?

Also booted into safe mode and only managed 320 Mbps.

Apologies, got confused with a previous post of yours were it looked as if you did a test using a different ethernet cable on your MBP....

Tested on my MBP this morning, wired (but different wire...maybe my Belkin cable is letting me down!)!

My bad! :)

My bad! :)

No problems....just tried another cable as well. New cable is testing at 550 Mbps on the MBP and 320 Mbps on Windows 10 :(

Tried loading Linux on a USB...had to use Rufus as Linux Live didn't make a bootable USB. Inside Linux the network connection wasn't present :(

the settings i put on my superhub 3 keep resetting every day or two which is infuriating. Do people tend to just put in modem mode and get a router? Is there a cheap yet reliable wireless router (only needs to be for a small flat) that anyone could suggest if so?

Anyone on the SH3 still experiencing problems with the Puma chip?

I'm at the end of contract and ready to renegotiate. Last time I did I was told by an utter cretin at VM CS that the Puma bug was not applicable in modem mode, so upgraded to 350 but, as says he was a cretin and I had a fight getting back to 200 on the SH2 as the Puma chip still went into diagnostic/maintenance even in modem mode. Packet loss and latency abounded.

He was correct.

The work was offloaded to the wifi chip which results in rubbish wifi reception due to the wifi chip now having to deal with more stuff now.

But in modem mode you aren't using wifi therefore the chips full resources can be used for the offloaded processes.

Therefore in modem mode it works fine.

In router mode you now get wifi issues instead.

Just get a cheap netgear one around the £50-£80 mark or anything which runs dd-wrt

Won't make any difference in the real world.

Anything over 100MB is overkill for most folk. All it means for me is I download patches faster everything else would be the same on 100MB.

I guess it depends on what you are using it for. If you are downloading games that are 60-70 Gb each you might notice a difference.

Anyway the problem now is that I have capability for 500 Mbps but only able to achieve 350 Mbps on my Killer/Intel Gigabit NIC.

Go into system properties and change the duplex mode of the NIC.

However in the real world you are talking instead of something downloading within 5 minutes it may take 6 minutes. You have to remember the other server has to be capable of feeding a 500MB connection too. There will be a cap somewhere plus overheads too.

Tried that...Intel NIC reporting it is connected at 1 Gbps as is the Killer Software.

You are right it is the difference between 5 to 6 minutes but when I am paying VM for the priviledge and they are actually providing 500 Mbps it is a shame the hardware/software doesn't want to allow me to utilise it. As I say, the MBP has no issues whatsoever in utilising the speed.

You can buy a top end NIC for pennies second hand off ebay.

I know I did. It was server quality and £15 tops. It was re-branded for Dell or HP but an Intel part. If you really want to fix it can be done for cheap.

I have 350MB and thinking of downgrading to 100MB it's just overkill. Unless you are doing something illegal I don't see the need for such a fad DL speed for home usage anyway.

I would do...but honestly it is a Gigabyte Gaming 7 motherboard Z170x (only 2 yrs old), I find it difficult to believe that it is not capable of 550 Mbps. I suspect it is a Win10 issue, just working through the million combinations of what it could be. Have also contacted Killer to see if they can shed some light on the issue.

well a motherboard will never be made of high quality parts. the onboard sound for example is terrible on all motherboards. they are built to a price point and it's likely electrical interference from other parts of the motherboard could be doing something or maybe not. it's best to have a dedicated separate part if you want the best. for all of £15 it's not worth worrying about.

what router are you using?

This was before the FW fix, so he was not correct, he was dishonest or ignorant to the facts.
