AMD Zen 2 (Ryzen 3000) - *** NO COMPETITOR HINTING ***

So

This seems to say that everything that gigabyte said about b450 and x470 boards enabling PICEX 4.0 is not happening, anyone know anything, thoughts e.t.c ?

It's no secret PCIe 4 signalling is more sensitive to board quality than PCIe 3. Not entirely surprising and a good idea to reserve 4 for X570 imo, even if *some* 3 and 4 series boards might work. Typical AMD for belaying this message and letting hearsay/confusion creep in

But this goes against everything gigabyte has said and the new bios they released's notes

Gigabyte can do what they want with their kit. If they fancy taking the gamble it will work reliably then fair play to them. I'm sure modded BIOS versions will turn up with the PCIe 4 option of they don't support it moving forward, for those who want to try...

People should bear in mind pcie 4 is a new feature. The chips will run in old boards, but their should be no expectation for AMD to support a substantially faster bus on existing boards. Nice if it happened, but unrealistic in practice. Same goes for Intel if it was the other way around as well.

If there's nothing physically different that requires another board then the expectation should be that it works. Otherwise it's being blocked on purpose.
Ivy Bridge brought PCI-E 3.0 support and would work on older boards (With some stipulations, which is fair game)

There's two reasons why b450 and x470 boards can't have PCIe 4.0:
  • The multiplexing chips used to reconfigure and re-direct the PCIe lanes are not designed for the ultra high frequencies required for PCIe 4.0
  • The boards are physically not capable of carrying the signals. There will be a big increase in board cost due to the move to higher layer counts, extremely tight tolerances and most likely IPC4+ boards (tricky to manufacture).
Just watch and see what the baseline X570 board prices are, they will be at least 30% higher than x470 of equivalent specs disregarding PCIe 4.0...

Edit: for anyone who's interested "IPC4+" is a reference to the materials and layering of the board, but also the interconnects between layers. These ultra high frequency signals need very particular geometries to work, shielding from nearby planes, etc etc.

PCIe x16 slot and primary M.2 have pretty direct connection to CPU, and there
Capability is about how well board has been designed and length of wiring.
Longer distance needs better quality, shorter distance doesn't necessarily need that.

And board makers tested PCIe v4.0 months ago successfully at least in better mobos.
But after speaking with several motherboard vendors here at CES 2019, we've learned that many of them have successfully tested PCIe 4.0 on 300- and 400-series AMD motherboards...

B-Die will however considering samsung just shelved it.

The EOL'd it, they are taking orders for it until August, and last deliveries of the IC's are in 2020, I'd hardly expect them to go up unless people buy into the hype of it disappearing. ;)

I definitely remember reading an article someone posted that this decision was reversed now? Could be complete rubbish though.

Well if you want a cheap decent board it appears that the ASRock Taichi X470 can be had for £119.97, pretty good VFM if you are being budget conscious and want to spend more on the CPU/RAM/Graphics etc. although if you want to make use of PCI-E 4.0 then it isn't going to be anygood. Lets hope the other boards start to drop ASAP. :)

Higher board costs isn't going to do AMD any favours.
I'm all in day one to buy 3800X/3900X depending on reviews with an X570 board and Navi 5700X.

Unless you need pci-e 4.0, then both x470 are staying in production and it's likely that companies will also probably update their x470 range in not too long. I suspect we see launch of x570 and zomg, loads of features, but then maybe we see some updated x470 boards a month or two later, so as not to take the shine off the x570 boards launching.

My mate just got one and they are back up to 210 already lol
