Hi folks, hoping to upgrade within the next few weeks. Likely when the custom coolers come out for the 5700 GPUs.

Would most agree going from a 4770K be a worthwhile upgrade to the 3600? I've researched plenty already on the 3600 vs 3600X vs 3700X etc. Everyone seems to say for gaming only, the 3600 is a no brainer...

I'd appreciate any thoughts on the spec or suggestions? Looking to front-mount the AIO CPU rad/cooler, then use the 120mm fan on the case rear to suit.

Current Specs:
Intel i7 4770K (with Corsair Hydro H110 AIO)
ASUS ROG Maximus VI HERO Z87 (Socket 1150)
AMD Vega 56 GPU
16GB Kingston HyperX Savage DDR3 2400MHz
Samsung 850 EVO 500GB
Samsung 840 EVO 250GB
Seagate 3TB HDD
Corsair Carbide 330R Case

I game on a Dell S2719DGF @ 1440p. Don't mind turning the odd graphic setting down to keep my FPS healthy.

This is what my basket is currently looking like. As you can tell I'm going for a fairly white theme :D Gutted I can't find any nice white X570 mobos, there is the Asus ones but I'm not keen on them and I think they have less power phases.

The GPU is a placeholder for when the custom coolers are released (mid-August I believe?).

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,297.00 (includes shipping: £13.20)

(also be buying this Corsair RMx 850W White PSU to match the theme ;))

so much bling. with that budget could probably cram a 2080 super into the build spec.
and vega 56 to 5700xt is only a ~30% jump in performance...not worth it imo.

2080 Super talking £300-350 extra aren't we? Pushing my budget past where I'd want it tbh, is it really worth it :o

I was debating not getting a new GPU and holding off on that til next wave, if the performance boost isn't too great.

In which case I could order a lot sooner if the rest of the spec looks in order.

yes that £300-350 extra by saving on the bling was the point i was trying to get across ;)

grab the msi b450 gaming carbon ac instead (£125) - 85 saved
ditch the cooler for a cheaper one (£30) - £110 saved
ditch the fan £25 saved
get the crucial/micron e-die ram (70) - £30 saved
get the black corsair rmx 750w (£80) - £50 saved
(get the nvme ssd from corsair) - £10 saved
reuse old case - £70 saved

that's your £385 extra for a 2080 super.

Looks stunning.

@Sparx

Without paying for Super 2080 at £700, but still more powerful then RX5700XT that isn't under water and custom overclocking .
Also, it's white !

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £549.89 (includes shipping: £9.90)

As @tamzzy has mentioned, get the black PSU... No class back panel nor cut out so see PSU

Tamzzy, @Plec has then ryzen 3600 gone up in price ! Swear I have Gibbo on record saying it's not going up just yet !

Change cooler to Air, ryzen. Not that hot !
Slap in some wing boost white RGB fans and £50 saving there !

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £109.68 (includes shipping: £8.70)

@tamzzy I can't justify losing my bling, I'll likely go for the black Corsair psu though. As did think the shroud covers it anyway. :D

@orbitalwalsh cheers, from the odd review out there on the 2070 Super it doesn't appear to outperform the 5700 XT by much and loses in some. Such as these reviews for example. Or am I missing something?! And it's ~£140 more expensive. :o

I was hoping an AIO White 5700 XT came out soon :p But again is FPS increase over Vega 56 worth it? But then gaming @ 1440p is a struggle, so even 30% give or take would help me still.

Likely take your advice on the psu + cpu cooler/fans though. Cooling likely be just as good compared to the AIO and few quid saved there.

Rx 5700 xt AIB/custom cards will be a while ! AMD are bad in that part ! 7nm process being heavily used prob doesn't help . Cards should have been released with AIB versions from the start !

2070 super is better 80% of the time due to better coolers , lower power and factory overclock .

Navi is a good card under water and power limits increased a bit ! You'll get sick of that blower card and if your using it in 30c of heat in summer will start to throttle it's speed !

If you've got 144hz 1440p monitor then chuck what ever cash you can at the GPU . Vega isn't worth the cash, not with £330 RX cards .

I thought someone on here said mid-August was expected for AIB cards? Or was that rubbish? I wouldn't get a reference blower 5700 GPU anyway, was just a basket placeholder :p No chance lol

I'm already running a Vega 56 just to clarify :) But if a 2070 Super is really much better, I may well invest in one then... Yes I'm running 1440p 144Hz on my S2719DGF so may need it.

if you've got a vega 56- only GPU i would recommend is 2080 super for an upgrade in power to be honest.

Guessing September for the Big companies but most likely and hopefully August for AMD only partners

upscale to 1440p to view text

The 4770K with 2400Mhz is also still a great CPU. Going to Ryzen 3600....I'd probably go 3700X to be honest, to get a proper beefy, long game upgrade.

Given you have a 1440P 144hz monitor, I'd be inclined to make sure the 4770K is OC'd, and slam in a 2070/2080 Super.

I'm now wondering whether to upgrade my Vega 56 to a 5700 XT, 2070 Super, or keep it and wait for next refresh/gen of GPUs? The 2080 Super is mega bucks I'm struggling to justify lol.

Also the black Corsair RMx 750w PSU doesn't appear to be ~£85 anymore, back at £125. Fml :(

The MSI B450 whilst looks a bargain, I have OCD for investing in older tech... Now the X570 mobos are out? :o Ugh...

if you're not getting the 2080 super/2080ti, everything is more of a diagonal-grade/side-grade rather than a true upgrade.
save your cash and stick with your vega

@tamzzy sad times, was hoping for a more affordable GPU upgrade over the Vega 56 right now... I wanted the 5700 XT or 2070 Super to be it! But bleh :(

@Journey yes I will be.

Is the 3700X really worth the £120 premium over 3600? For gaming only there doesn't seem to be any point.

But future proofing makes me think if the next few years games, will begin to take advantage of all these cores etc... then I'll see the benefit if I got the 3700X likely?

This rig has lasted me since August 2013... bar the few SSD upgrades and GPUs. Be nice if my next rig one could last the same.

It's all about timing and price drops from here on out.

Currently a £188 CPU will do just fine, so why spend another £131 now? It is inevitable that the pricing of the 3xxx CPU's will drop over the next 12 months, and 4xxx will follow. The chances are that the bottom tier 8c/16t part will be the new £188 part next time round but on a more mature 7nm+ EUV process giving greater clock speeds and maybe even a small IPC bump.

So, in 24 months if you buy the right board now you could very well drop in the next 8c or even 12c part and by the time you sell off the 3600 still not have spent much more than the original £319 for the 3700X. Logical process IMO. :)

Very true, I think I'll settle on the 3600 and maybe look at the 4000 series next year.

Just need to decide on the GPU now... where to go with that one :o

EDIT: meant the 3600 :D
