I'm giving up on motorways

I don't have to do very much long distance driving these days, but when I do a plan my routes away from the motorway

Problem is half these morons are so unaware of their surroundings they panic when you pass on the left and are unpredictable.

Yep - that's what I was scared off, if I'd have proceeded to pass he would have wiped me out with his sudden manoeuvre into my lane so glad I acted cautiously!

My commute on the M1 and M25 used to wind me up no end due to lane hoggers, but i'm learning (slowly) to just go with the flow, i either just undertake or sit in the same lane as well. My main annoyance is the whole Smart motorway idea, whoever thought it was a good idea to remove the hard shoulder should be shot...

That's why you FLOOR it past on the left, then they have less time to "react" :D

You do get some of the self-righteous types getting annoyed, but that is part of the fun. If you really want to see angry face, drop back and do it again while they are already kicking off.

Yep looking forward to a rush hour drive from North Wales to Leeds tonight :(

With lighter traffic but still not clear the choice is either 60 or 80mph. Anything in between is just too much hassle with cruise control with the "can't drive at anything remotely like a constant speed" brigade

After my local news (Cambridge area) reported, proudly, that a learner driver wrote off her mum's car in the morning. Decided to take her last driving lesson on the same day, despite admitting had suffered a concussion, and passed her driving test the very next day.
Even if the whole accident was caused by the fact that other driver decided to overtake her next to a bend, and passing quite close, her mum shouting her name, and the lack of experience resulted in the car few metres from the road, in its roof.
Clearly, as a learner driver, you should be aware that bit all drivers would be considerate, but as someone learning to drive many years ago, as soon as I notice someone trying to overtake me, I would allow it. It's basic. Reading, constantly, what's happening around you.
Another problem is, when/if caught, very rare to happen as no police around, the reckless driver wouldn't face any serious punishment.
As avoiding motorways is not an option for me, I try my best to avoid problems and, as bad as it may sound, assume every other driver is a bad driver, an accident in potential.
Lane hogging, fail to indicate when changing lanes, overtaking and braking just after, to gain a precious 1 position, overtaking using the inner lane of roundabouts, ignore someone's priority at a junction/roundabout, nearly causing an accident and simply raisin the hand, as "sorry, sorted".

Correct. The same people who loves to cruise at the second lane, usually at your blind spot, or worst, at a lorry/van's blind spot, and when they try to allow someone to join the motorway, a near miss. Because the fool can't bother to drive at least at the speed limit, overtake and back to the first lane.

US motorways are great. As long as it's safe to do so you can overtake on the left or right, so if the traffic is nicely spaced out you can do a great bit of weaving using all the lanes.

If they'd spent a fraction of the motorway expansion budget on better driver education and public campaigns to stay left then we probably wouldn't have needed to upgrade the motorways in the first place.

"Smart" motorways are a downgrade not an upgrade.

******* Quashqai's! Always them and those 3008 jockeys

Wait till you come across the council estate mid-life crisis in a Vauxhall Mokka or Kia/Hyundai faux by faux.

My current commute is along the M1, J4 to J11, most of which is variable speed limit and get to see these idiots everyday! And what is it with Prius drivers who insist driving their eco wagons at 90 when the variable limit and cameras end? Almost as if they have a chip on their shoulders.

I don't do motorways very often, although travel the A1 daily which is just as bad. Just come home via the M11 which can be pretty dreadful.

It's very difficult to just sit and do 70 these days. You overtake a lorry or something and there will always be someone fly up behind you at mach 3 and tailgate you until you move out the way. Or you end up with someone overtaking you, and then they slow down and match your speed blocking you from pulling out when coming up behind a lorry.

Yep, "smart" motorways are about as stupid as "smart" energy meters. Complicated and expensive tech which just made a simple idea worse. OFC they are never going to admit it was a bad idea, because it would make it look like a waste of public money...

I have no problem undertaking the braindead on the road

I saw a bloody Hyundai "Prius+" with flashy blue lights in the grill, those cheeky undercovers going even more undercover :D

They should just allow overtaking on both sides, the kind of people who sit in the outside lane without overtaking anything are never going to change, so it’s pointless trying to educate them. I very rarely get held up on 3+ lane motorways anymore since I started doing that - I can normally pick my way through without having to accelerate / brake. Sometimes I don’t even have to turn off the cruise control. Probably doesn’t do the Range Rover stereotype any favours but oh well :p

Every 5 miles, close the left most lane and open a new one on the right. People would at least then be filtered over to the left, maybe without even noticing it.
