How much Twitch Streamers Make (and the insanity)

I couldn't help but edit the original post for this thread. When I made it my vocabulary was that of someone who's had a few too many on a Friday night, and had become resentful and developed a fixation on the word 'mediocre'.

The gist of the post remains the same.

I just don't understand what itch is scratched by those who throw money at these streamers, especially via gifted subs or direct donations. Is it to appear as a high roller perhaps amongst complete strangers? Is it worshipfulness of the streamer? Are there parallels to be drawn with those who publicly stake large amounts in casinos for spectacle, or who gift large sums of money to strippers? Even if only for a chat rather than anything sexual?

As explained, different people enjoy different entertainment.... people who enjoy eastenders for example... I don't find it entertaining but I understand why they do (it entertains them).

Yes but I don't hear of donations given each episode or free TV licenses being gifted by high rollers regarding Eastenders. Whatever is going on regarding monetisation of Twitch streams seems to be scratching an itch on a far more personal level to those who actively divert their wealth to streamers. The idea of 'you're not supporting me, you're supporting the channel' or whatever is bonkers. They aren't a startup and their overheads are nothing compared to the revenue they're generating. And as for the implied threat they'll pull their content if they don't reach $1 million a year in subs/donations, how terrifying. I'm sure there's only about 100,000 people equally entertaining and willing to thrust themselves into the limelight playing games or whatever.

Hmmm.

The TV license is a form of donation, and TV shows do give away prizes. It's pretty similar!

Who says that?

Why are you so worried and upset about what other people are earning? That's the main issue here. There are plenty of industries where people earn a lot of money for not doing very much, footballers, actors, models, etc. Just worry about yourself and how you're going to get to a level of income where you're content, not what other people are earning. This just breeds resentment and envy and leads to people voting for Labour.

I swear prices of computer parts like doubled since all this money started pouring into twitch. They all buy the best of the best because it’s making them money so it makes sense but it’s driving up the prices. How people have money to jut throw at strangers playing games I don’t know

They often don't buy the best. People on this forum spend far more than some of the bigger twitch streamers. Tfue for instance has spent the majority of his Fortnite career gaming on a 7700k. They often spend a lot on keyboards, mouse, chair and sound setup. Everything else is frequently outdated. New tech, rgb with more and more unnecessary features and the weak pound is what's making things expensive.

Not really, think about the 3700x, it costs the same as the 2600k when that released (accounting for inflation, weaker GBP), the only reason why GPU's are expensive is nVidia has the monopoly, it's not like you need a top end GPU to stream.

There are different people who watch streamers:

1. Fanboys - Basically they adore the streamer
2. Competitive players - Looking to get better at the game and pick up tips
3. People who want to see what a game is like. For example if a new game comes out you can watch someone playing it and see if it is for you.
4. Entertainment. Streamers can be fun to watch especially if they are god like at a game and you wish you were them. No different to people watching boxing, football, olympics, etc.

OP - You sound very butthurt. I assume this is because you don't value streamers yet they are making lots of money whilst you yourself are a peasant. I think you need to get over this because plenty of people make lots of money in different ways. This isn't going away and is only going to get bigger. I see it it beating youtube in the future. Where you will have live cooking shows, etc on twitch where people will be like what do I want to have for dinner. Lemme go see what such and such is making right now.

I know a few high level players. One even beat a very famous UK youtuber whilst he was carrying someone and the youtuber was in a stacked team (he even uploaded this to youtube). He regularly watches twitch streamers to pick up tips on new maps especially when there has been a weapon patch, etc. So he knows what the best guns are to use for that weekend on that specific map and to see how people will likely play against him on that map.

Basically the good players are leagues ahead of the average player in terms of gameskill. They have spent a lot of time honing that skill too. It's no different to Messi being paid £900K a week. Except it's on a much smaller scale at the moment but esports will rival major sports one day to the point the best fragger will be earning millions every week. We already had some 16 year old kid in england win a million dollars at a fortnite comp recently.

OP - either git gud or quit crying. your negative attitude towards streamers reeks of jealousy.

All over the world...
I watch a lot of YouTube streamers as I play destiny 2 a lot so always watch the ones I’ve subscribed to in order to pick up tips about which weapons, armour to get or grind for.

One I watch on twitch but I have never and neither would I ever contribute anything towards them other than a virtual like. If they were playing the game for me and getting me things I want but not good enough to get it on my own, then yeh I would fling them a few £’s or $’s their way as they have taken the time to do those activities for me.

But kudos to the guys that are doing it and getting paid for it. I don’t see any point of being upset over it, sure it’s insane the money some are making but they have an audience that is willing to pay them that much money.

It is effectively already happening. Another big star is on twitch with his state of trance channel. Armin Van Buuren.

Most of the ones I've saw are partnered with MSI, the RTX team, Logitech, HyperX and whatnot. They're given the gear for keeps. I've seen a lot of female twitch streamers who were given i9 9900k and 2080 Ti's for free because they're partnered with the companies. Once again, contacts. Because of this they appear at Intel's/MSI booths etc for events from time to time.

Really though the reality is that streamer donations and the culture it creates harbours something unhealthy. I saw this below on a thread elsewhere and it's just one example of many hundreds/thousands.

If the above text is true, which I doubt (but it's believable), then guys like that deserve to be taken for every penny they have for being absolute mugs.

Self-delusion is a powerful ting. I said earlier I don't understand it. How any of these followers can believe they are anything other than clients - ie income. Cash money.

The idea that they have any kind of relationship with the person they follow and donate to is *obviously* self-delusion. And a costly one at that.

Porn is free, y'all. And you have just as much connection with the pornstar (ie none) as you might with one of these streamers.

Holy ****, that guy has got to be up there as one of the ultimate incels. In terms of being friend zoned that is rather extreme, he's not just helped her with some homework or some other cliched friend zone stuff but he's dedicated a bunch of hours each day (for two years!), while she's earning money, to be a "moderator" on her channel and rather than her paying him for his time, he's the one paying her on top of giving her free labour! And his reward for this, he gets to stare at her a bit and sometimes get a message saying he's cute (seemingly not too frequently as he referenced one from two months prior to that convo).

That bit at the end is golden too, he's got the opportunity to be a complete chump for some other cam girl, apparently this is a bad thing for her... as if she can't find some other neckbeard to do the same job he was doing for free.

(one user on here got very triggered after the last time I posted the above image to the point where he started stalking me, I wonder if it was a bit too close to home)
