Outrage over RNLI overseas spending

There's definite scope for a seamen/semen joke here, but instead I'm just going to roll my eyes at the lack of empathy, reactionary language and proud dismissal of progressive humanitarian values on display.
I'm going to roll my eyes at the idea that being "progressive" means picking up the tab for foreign countries that don't want to spend money on their own impoverished citizens.

And UK charities that are now motivated by scoring "PC points" with people like you.

And said people like you who apparently prefer this country to spend its money propping up corrupt foreign regimes, so we can all be worse off in this country, through no fault of our own.

"Progressive". What a joke!

You want to level the playing field by making us (Brits) worse off.

Funnily enough I was just listening to one of your lot on the BBC Hard Talk. Some happy clappy "the EU has a responsibility to accept all migrants" type nonsense.

When asked if the EU could literally accept all the migrants who wanted to come here, she simply said, "Oh there wouldn't be that many, really." Germany was mentioned and she proceeded to say, "Oh the Germans want to take migrants - it's really popular in Germany." (AfD says hi)

Mindless. PC is mindless.

I'd rather they don't spend any of their money overseas, but they do an amazing job so I'm going to continue throwing my change in when every I pass a lifeboat station.

I have family who work for the RNLI who have been caught up in these redundancies but thankfully kept their job. I was told a year ago by them this was on the horizon and that the charity bosses were expanding way beyond their remit with vanity projects and creating jobs that had no connection to their core business. This was causing major problems with funding and revenue streams, especially at a time they were shutting down historic UK stations.

This seems to be the most rounded response that I agree with.

My wife's uncle was a volunteer lifeboat crew at wells next the sea, I think they are a good charity in general and do great things, I am up at the coast a fair bit and they are busy. My step son raised some £2500 pounds swimming for them a few years back.

But I agree it's shame, and agree with a lot of the sentiments that FoxEye had made earlier.

Given how the expenditure on overseas as a percentage is miniscule, I don't have an issue with this and find the outrage disgusting but unsurprising.

This. Donate £20 and only 40p of that will be spent abroad.

And @FoxEye, I am equally glad i dont have the bitterness and hatred that courses through you. It must be horrible to be so bitter on a daily basis and I do feel sorry for you.

It's the usual 'Go woke, go Broke'.

The RNLI should make it very clear where spend peoples money.

It seems they wanted some of this under the radar which seems dishonest as they are abusing the RNLI brand and reputation.

I guess people are intentionally mis-reading this to make an unfounded point about Brexit and Brexiteers.

Let me help you all out.

1. "Forced to cut jobs in the UK"
2. Spending £millions on overseas projects.

The outrage is perfectly justifiable when viewed that way.

e: Who of us doesn't know that £millions is wasted in corruption in Africa every year? The african governments are more than able to fund their own programmes to teach mulslim girls to swim in Burkinis.

Why should the RNLI be funding such projects, whilst at the same time cutting staff in the UK?

Because it's PC. It appeals to the kind of person who has already posted, mocking so-called "xenophobia."

It's not xenophobia. We keep funnelling money to Africa and India - places with extremely wealthy middle and upper classes. Places where the extremely wealthy middle and upper classes don't give a flying toss about their own poor.

We're being mugs by supporting the poor in other countries - countries that simply choose not to bother with their own poor.

Meanwhile this country has it's own poor (eg homeless) that is an ever-growing problem.

Sorry, but I wouldn't want my donations going to help teach African kids to swim in burkinis, unless there was so much money in the kitty that all the RNLI's UK operations were fully funded. They aren't.

Great post.

Agreed and I don't personally have an issue with that, it just seems they didn't make it more widely known where peoples money is being used. Abusing the the brand and reputation of the RNLI is the issue i see here.

If i lived by the sea and played about in boats yes i would donate, alas i live smack bang in the middle of the UK and choose the air ambulance instead.

People only see the money, all about the money never the influence, profile of the organisation, or maybe just maybe the idea its doing some good elsewhere.

I am getting tired of american capitalism/populism taking over the world.

In 2018 our £163.5M running costs were divided up into:

  • Lifeboats, property and equipment 53%
  • Lifeboat service 27%
  • Lifeguard rescue 12%
  • Safety, education and awareness 6%
  • International 2%.

It stands to reason that if/when you give to charity, you research and keep track. It's on their website and i'd be surprised if it wasn't in the documentation/info you receive periodically.

It's mentioned several times in the annual report.

I wonder, out of all the people that are getting outraged by this, how many actually give to the charity.

And those people I know of that are of a generation that don't spend their time researching everything in their lives, they give based on the RNLI brand and reputation alone. It's a unique charity in that respect.

It they are on the streets raising funds, they should be extolling the virtues of their efforts in helping the less fortunate overseas.

HAHA, do you feel sorry for yourself when the same hatred and bitterness courses through you...

I have no hatred or bitterness or are you referring to my Trump posts? I dont hate him, no matter how many times you make that allegation to deflect the valid points I am making. Sad that you should think so and can;t deferientiate between logical and valid criticism and hatred.

People Are Cancelling Their RNLI Donations Because They Save Children In Other Countries

Since when did everyone become so thoughtless and nasty? A UK charity spends 2% of their budget on overseas work (in an effort to prevent children from drowning) and people are cancelling donations over it and making out that it is some sort of subterfuge ..?
This tweet was from a Daily Mail reader, that is all you need to know.

This post comes across as bitter and hateful. Specifically the passive aggressive and snide "I feel sorry for you", come on...
