*** Official Ubiquiti Discussion Thread ***

I have 3 AC Lites, (one on each floor) and they provide 5 bars Wi-fi across the whole house and never miss a beat. Speed is never an issue. I have 5 echos and 5 firestick/FireTV as well as iPads, laptops, smartphones and other WiFi equipment and I haven’t had a single stutter or loss of streaming.

Ok I've now mounted it on the landing ceiling and speeds are now fantastic. iPads/iPhone 200+ mb/s which is our broadband speed. MacBook Pro 190/mb/s. The only issue I have now is that my PC still doesn't see the 5ghz signal and neither does the new LG tele. Both see the VH 5ghz signal, any ideas why neither pickup the UniFi AP AC Lite 5Ghz signal? Wifi card in my PC is an Asus PCE-AC56 and the LG tele is the 2019 55"C9 OLED so latest version. Seems odd that neither see it.

Anybody know if Ubiquiti are going to do the smart doorbell? No news since It was teased in the community by appearing in a picture of the protect range.

Have you switched off the VM WLAN yet?

Yes I have and still neither my PC or tele see the 5ghz. Could it be the channel that the UniFi has selected? For 2.4ghz it is using 1-3 and for 5ghz it is using 149. Although looking through the settings I can't find an option for changing these anyway, I guess I'm missing something.

Edit: Ok I found the settings for changing channels. It's on auto but it has changed itself now. 2G is now 11 and 5G 46 and my PC sees and connects as does my TV. So I guess it was a channel thing.

I was fed up with the wifi connection in a few places downstairs due to having the BT home hub in my office upstairs. I had not heard of Unbquiti before but thanks to this thread I have now dumped the Homehub and have the following system.

Unifi Security gateway
Unifi 8 port Poe Switch
2 X AP AC Lite's
Cloudkey.

I Have also brought an Asus 10Gb network card for my unraid server and a Netgear 10 port Switch with 2 X 10Gb capable ports so I can copy files faster from my main computer that has a 10Gb adapter on the motherboard.

It has not been cheap but I am very happy with the results and the managment options I have on my network now. It's also addictive as I am now planning security cameras to be added in the new year.

Can somebody point me in the right direction. Im looking to set my Virgin hub in modem mode and get i think an edge router. However i want 5ghz wireless too. I dont need anything too crazy just a decent wifi that reaches throughout the house (i think) and mainly want something to hopefully improve my ping and have better router settings for gaming on the PS4 which will be hardwired. Can anybody tell me what items i need to do this as cheaply as possible.

I think there will be many who read this post that are better qualified to answer this but I will try to help.

I think the Unifi security gate way has surpassed the edge router as the one to go for after the latest upgrades.
1 X AP AC Lite located in the down stairs hallway of my house that was built in 1970's was enough for me to get a decent conection anywhere in the house but I have added 1 upstairs to have an excellent conection everywhere.
You will need a switch of some kind but the access points come with Poe injectors so you could go cheap to save money and add a managed unifi Poe switch at a later date if you need.
You do not need the cloudkey but if you want a lot of the advance features available from unifi then you will need a machine running the client left on at all times.

So cheapest option would be the USG + 1 AP AC Lite + cheap switch and Cables. so this would cost around £200.

Thanks for the help. Is it plug and play or am I going to need to research the thing to set it all up. Also what is the switch for ? And does the above router come with all the customisable settings to tweak for gaming etc?

I had to do some research to set mine up. I had to set mine up as PPoe as it connected to my BT modem so I had to set DNS server adresses and login. I think you can set your virgin hub to modem mode but you will have to research for how to get them to interact.
The USG does not come with multiple ports so you will have to decide how many you need and buy a switch with enough. Netgear do small switches in the £16 for 5 ports up range.

Have a look at the Unifi Dream Machine (UDM) - its targeted squarely at high-end home users and very small offices and it's an all-in-one Unifi router, access point, switch and cloud key (controller) in one box. Definitely the one you want.

does anybody have info on the amplifi alien release, cant seem to buy it anywhere in UK, looking on amazon.co.uk its not listed either ?

Interested to know this also. The alien is a suspiciously marketed... it's listed as a tri-band router in places but from the spec it sounds like the wifi5 and wifi6 5Ghz bands are actually connected to a dual band antenna array? So it's actually dual band?

Finally got work setup with Ui equipment and what a breath of fresh air from the old mish mash of switches/routers etc.

Being able to login and see everything under one login is fantastic.

you might want to check if it says dual/triple band or channel. There are only 2 bands, 2.4GHz and 5GHz.
