Road Cycling

I'm no Rapha fanboi but that's a bit harsh, I think it's a good incentive for most to get out over Christmas, even if you only aim for one of the intermediate distances. Let's face it, the weather is rarely that bad at this time of year, unless you live in deepest darkest Scotland (sorry @xdcx ).

Hey take it back boyo. I got my 500 easy last year including a 220KM loop from east coast to west coast (half of it was utter grim but I am hard as nails!).

It'll either be easy goings this year again or completely dreadful. We shall see! :p

Last year down here couldn't have been more perfect, no rain, dry roads, little wind. I fear this year will be very different.

https://www.strava.com/activities/2943198938/segments/73013763673 - bodes well, Egan Bernal taking popular Majorca KOM's when out training. Really do think we'll see some fantastic riding from him this year.

Chris who won pan celtic is a Dunfermline chap also. He might know him. But both Chris and I have been up North here our entire cycling time really. Neither of us raced bikes when we live back in the motherland.
I see on Ross profile on BC he doesn't do RR or TT so no likely either of us would know him from races and we don't ride in the Kingdom unless we are home visiting family etc, so don't really know the regulars of the area down there.

CHAS is a fine charity. Jo's good friend is a nurse for them also.
Ah my bad, just I'd seen quite a few of your rides around Fife so figured you'd know some of the clubs/regular riders around there! :)

Haha I'll admit I was being overly harsh about it. Truth is I see usually the same riders fail it every year due to bad riding/bad kit choices/no training and blame everything but themselves, while also patting themselves on the back for being 'hardmen' when they've not ridden since October and hibernate again until April.

It always seems to be the same few who complete it, most without a fanfare!

Yup very different here so far too. So much rain and flooding around. I still stand by what I said - I've got wet more times the last 2 months than I have for the last 18+!

Was wet & windy again last night so the other half felt sorry for me and came to pick me up from work. Got soaked again this morning, last day at work so last time getting wet this decade/year/etc.

TLDR; I'm turning soft.

Yup - never mind Spatz overshoes, snorkel and flippers needed most days here. Some of the roads are still pretty trashed from the floods in October - I do report the worst bits to the council but they must have a huge backlog to get through

All this talk of overshoes, I had two pairs of socks and 3mm neoprene Pro overshoes on for the A80 and my toes still got cold.

My mate has ordered the Legalz? version of them for his Christmas so it'll be interesting to see what he says about them. His coach uses them but he is so far south it doesn't count(Mule CC? Near Wales?)

@xdcx Torvelo Racing to do with the Torvelo shop? I've met the chap Doog out on the bike and see a few faces around here with the kit on now.

Doing some maintenance on the rear deraileur, chain had got caught over end during a downshift, grinding metal, until I stopped,
- found I had previously (again) re-mounted the the plate oriented wrong way round, as shown on right.

A Question : the jockey 'cups' have different hole size for inside and outside - is that peculair to this sachs derailleur, or always the case ?

there was some corrosion, on the cups that I removed with wire brush, doesn't seem you can but stainless ones ?
if I replace them, the ones with bearings are a few quid more
BBB RollerBoys 10T Jockey Wheels 7/8/9/10Speed Shimano-Campag

but - unclear if they would fit, with the cup hole difference ? I don't think sheldon answers this

Plans for Christmas riding just took a bit of a hit - checked the winter bike over after taking it off the turbo, and hydraulic oil's leaking from where the hose joins the shifter. Tightened it slightly with no luck so I assume a seal's gone.

Looks like it's a switch to the summer bike, which I have no mudguards for, so I feel sorry for the people I'll be riding with. I'll be stuck at the back all ride! On the plus side, at least it didn't go mid-ride. Although, one disc brake may be better than two rim brakes when it's wet!

That's a cool old derailleur. You're probably better off asking somewhere that's focused on old stuff like lfgss or retrobike

Yep, I've reviewed them, very little sizing information on the likes of shimanos sites , so looks like I'll have to get some on ebay, and send back if the pulley wheel won't play ball.

Quite a few negative Amazon reviews on BBB ones, with bearings seizing up, so probably not those, maybe tacx,
at least the old style are easy to clean, don't fancy repacking ball race ones.
I can't believe alloy/steel pulleys aren't aggressive on chains - with the grit thrown in.

I'm not a fan of sealed bearing jockey wheels.

In theory they are great but do seize up often, quite often with sram Eagle ones.

The tacx ones come with plastic top hat spacers so they can change the diameter of the hole and also the width. Shimano and most modern mechs are 11 tooth, i think you can get 10 tooth ones from tacx?

Good start to my Festive500, woke up at 5:30 and couldn't get back to sleep so got out and did just over 2 hours and 62KM (38miles....) Will aim to get at least another 25 done tonight.

Garmin also agreed to replace my faulty pods this morning, so happy Christmas to me!

I went out and banked 160 odd km. Really strong winds down here (constant 30mph gusts) so it was pretty tough from the get go.

For some reason I decided a 30 mile coast road return into the headwind was a good idea... it was far from it. Struggling to push 11mph at times and ended up taking well over 2 hours to do 30 miles back home (first 70 miles . The odd rain shower said hello too. Honestly, had I been offered a lift at any point I'd have jumped at the chance. I really considered taking the train.

Looking on Strava I wasn’t the only one out today! Loving the winter bike, smooth, silent and dry! No components I think I wish I had bought xxxx instead of.

Car drivers though! Just follow the Highway Code and it would be a lot simpler! Give way, oh no I’ll give way to you, oh no I insist you first. Then both go. By which time I’ve caught up the 100m (doing 20kmph uphill) I was behind them, when if they had just done what they should have done then everyone would have been on their way already. Wouldn’t mind if it was a road that took you somewhere, but it’s a minor road 1.5 lanes wide that just loops round the reservoir! Grrr

Been very quiet in here! OBviously too much indulging in christmas dinner...

How's everyones Christmas' been? Get anything good or not worth the risk of your missus finding out how much stuff actually costs for cycling.

Been nailing the festive 500 and over halfway there, managed just over 50 miles Christmas morning before coming back and cooking for my family and then a quick 25 miles yesterday morning of proper training before heading up to my brothers for the day. Eyes are slowly focusing towards national CX champs in the second week of January up in Shrewsbury, so the miles are helping keep the weight off - ish!...

Got a sickness bug last weekend. Was dying until Xmas eve and only just now feeling "myself".
I've still not eaten 3 square proper meals in a day a week later :(

I got 5 pair of Pongo socks though and a couple of Sticky bottles :D
Plus my RC901 shoes. So I done rather well!!

Hiya!

I've been super lazy, had a slight head cold since the 23rd so haven't been smashing it.

Beers most nights for me and I did 29 miles/2000ft on just eat on Thursday night.

Hopefully it stays dry for 10am to get a ride in with the bunch :D

Ive been a bad boy lately. Nothing but getting ******. I went out on Christmas Eve with the club for the first time in 10 weeks. It wasn’t pretty. Our rides tend to have a fair bit of climbing and after only 30 miles I was toast. I’ve basically given up on any form of healthy eating until jan 1st when I switch from meat free to vegan. I’m hoping I can average a 2lb/week weight loss until April so I can smash the Chaingang.

Well, that’s the plan anyway!

Lots of squatting, with a couple of interval sessions.

I miss having legs that destroyed my clothing...
