*** Nintendo Switch ***

Is there any particular type of sd card to buy? I mean like rated speeds or such. Just I'll be looking at 512gb or high for long term storage

Sandisk's official Nintendo cards are U3, 100MBps Read, 50/60MBps read.
Nintendo's official website states:
High-speed microSD card guidelines:
  • UHS-I (Ultra High Speed Phase I) compatible
  • Transfer speed 60 - 95 MB/sec (the higher the transfer speed, the better gameplay experience on Nintendo Switch)

Kingston and Integral tend to have the better deals going atm, higher rated specs than the Sandisk stuff that typically comes up on offer.

256GB U3 card with up to 100MBps read, 50MBps+ writes currently available from several branded and reasonably well rated own-brand ranges for around £25 quid are currently available.
I remember reading some reviews which basically suggest once as long as you get a decent speed card, the difference the cards make are negligible as the Switch itself becomes the transfer performance bottleneck, and cannot make use of the higher performance levels really.

Should be able to find something decent. 512GB cards are still £60+

That's why I wanted to flag this whole point though, 256GB should be a pretty sweet spot for many without breaking the bank given the average size of most games, patches etc, and with memory prices potentially set to rise; might be a good time to grab.

Has some additional data on why its worth opting for one of the U3 cards over saving a little money on U1. There's a few decent videos on Youtube where you can see different cards/speed ratings side by side to see the actual differences.
U3 should guarantee MINIMUM sequential writes of 30MBps, vs U1's 10MBps though so it should tell you you're getting higher performance memory. A1 also says a similar thing (higher IOPs)

MAKE SURE TO GET A DECENT BRAND OR KNOWN QUALITY OWN BRAND CARD AND NOT A GENERIC-EL-CHEAPO!

Not really, as long its Samsung, Kingston or Sandisk. You will be fine, as they don't manufacture really slow speeds. I have Kingston in my Switch and Sandisk in my Switch Lite.

Looks like I'll be picking up a few of the cheaper titles. Spent a lot since getting the console less than 2 weeks ago so should really sit back and play for a bit.

Might try:
Broforce (played an early demo on the PC years ago and feel like it'll suit handheld mode)
Katamari Damacy (for the music!)
Maybe The Escapists? Will check out some details first

Then I'll hold out for the first party stuff coming next week apparently

My list, mostly indie games, probably pick two or threee out the bunch. Whats the top 3 out of this list guys?
katana zero
moonlighter
monster boy and the cursed kingdom
monster boy and the dragon trap
battle chasers night war
sparklight
wargroove
rayman legends
children of morta

My favourites there are katana zero and rayman. I've got some of the others but I haven't played them yet.

That was the two i was looking at. my partner enjoyed the demo so im looking for some co-op action thats not too hard. She hated mario kart as she struggled with the fast pace...this was on 50cc haha.

I played rayman legends with my wife who doesn't play games. It was fun but she got a bit stressed!

If you can convince her to try again with Mario Kart my other half loves it with the driving assist on, keeps her on the track more than me on some of the courses. Turn it off and she's ready to quit after about 2 races though...
