We all remember the wonderful summer from last year but i am sure many struggled to sleep at night. :o

I do have a fan and used to have the window open with the fan blowing the hot air out buuuuuut that didn't work so good.

Can anyone spec me an air conditoning unit or something (max 250,not 100... i reckon) that will solve my problem before it's a problem?

THANKS.

Edit: So for an AC of say 250, any ideas?

If you want cheap, you can get air coolers which are basically a fan unit which blows the air across the surface of a pool of water to cool and hydrate it.

Better than a fan, significantly worse than air con I suspect.

I found having the downstairs windows open during the night and having a fan blowing upstairs helped, as well as a fan on low speed in the bedroom.

Portable AC units to be at their most efficient need two ducts, one to draw air from outside and one to exhaust outside. Else with a single duct unit you end up creating a negative pressure in the room it's operating drawing warm air in from elsewhere.

Sadly their doesn't appear any readily available and reasonably priced dual duct units in the uk.

Well the obvious answer is AC with temperatures set to hit 24c this week and the warmest winter on record just past you'd better get used to the idea. £100 won't get you much though.

Leaving downstairs windows open might not be so great for the old home insurance though if someone uses the open window to break in at ground level. Your windows could be too small for anyone to use them etc, don't know, but it's a consideration anyway.

My old house was stupidly well insulated so it was hitting like 30 degrees C upstairs even when I wasn't in all day. I think my new one should stay a bit cooler hopefully. I have a portable AC unit but it's not very portable really due to it's weight, and it needs to vent out the window so not perfect.

A good split aircon system would be a wise investment if temps keep creeping up like they have been, might be hard to get one installed right now though.

Have been thinking about this also. I see many well specced units out there at good prices, but the installation costs are absurd?! Am I missing something as to why its so expensive?

A portable AC unit is always going to help. As mentioned above they're far from perfect, but if you can seal up the exhaust fairly well then it'll help. I think mine is a 9000btu unit, and it can definitely knock a few degrees off the room temperature, and reduce the humidity which makes a huge difference to getting comfortable. It certainly does struggle a bit in really hot weather, but the flow of cold air is still complete bliss. Be warned they are pretty damn noisy though.

If you own your house and plan to live there for a few years, nothing will beat a split AC system in terms of performance, noise levels and efficiency, they're really good. Depending on your skills you can buy them as a self-install with pre-filled systems that just need connecting up.

Assume you are talking about going full central heat and air with split systems? I think it's simply down to the prices commanded for qualified installers, the cost to get a full office split-system installed at my previous employer (small office, 120 ish people) was going to cost more than the system itself.

Good call in thinking about this now. Look forward to family/friends telling you not to bother as 'we only have a few good days of summer'..
Best option is a cheap portable AC unit from gumtree or wherever. No their not that efficient and are usually quite noisy, but both are fair sacrifices for a good night's sleep & smugmode the following day.
You can DIY fit a split AC system if you're up to it & want a more permanent & effective system.

A breeze helps. So a large fan to the bed will make a world of difference. Also try to get some through flow of air such as two windows open on the bedroom floor; one in your bedroom near your bed and one on the opposite side of the house if possible.

I wouldn't get an air cooler. They humdify the room.

You want A/C as they also act as a dehumidifier. I have something like this (link below), £300 for a 5K unit or £350 for a 7K unit. Mine is actually 8K and got it on the cheap for £170 as it as a customer-returned item.

You also need a window adapter / seal for the exhaust like this.

Having lived in Cyprus for four years, a ceiling fan helps. Generally a lot quieter than anything else.

An air con unit will work. It used to take my room from 38c to 34c, with the window taped up etc.

The best and only way, imo, is a proper wall mounted aircon unit. I could actually make my room cold with this, and have a good night's sleep.

But for the UK? A fan and some open windows.

You live in England.
Yep, and my bedroom was 32c last summer. This year whilst I’ll likely be working from home (and thus running more electronic equipment), it’ll be even more unbearable, not to mention the fact that my office is already hitting mid to high 20s in the last few warm weeks.

I’ve already got a couple of portable A/C units on the way, and if this lockdown goes away I’ll likely look to get a proper splic HVAC system put in.
