What "man jobs" have you done today?

not masive job took out a rotten 75mm*75mm fence post dug down and broke up the concrete with my sds chisels, leveled a new post in the hole and braced it,going to use some of the expanding foam post mix it just seems easier as I'm literally doing one post and also added some gravel boards at the bottom of the fence so i can level off the area behind the fence.

Did a bit of pruning in the garden

Still the stumps to get out (I'll probably get someone in to do that as they're huge!)

And the spoils need to be gotten rid of, may burn some in the incinerator but likely just get a skip dropped on the drive

Yet more pruning .....

Few recent jobs:

Bench seat for the dining room. Frame is just CLS (which you can't see) outside is softwood (birch?) ply and the trim on the top and round the seat base is maple. I was going to go for a dark contrasting wood, but I'm quite glad I didn't.

Old school desk for my daughter. I didn't take any before pictures, but it was painted in thick, drippy, off white paint all over. I had to strip about 5 layers of various colours of paint off it to get it back to wood, I had initially thought it was pine blockboard or something, turns out it's beech. Top has been done is osmo top oil and lacquered to make it extra durable. The legs have just been painted in blue, the only blue (Denim?) I could get in this current situation! I think it's a leyland water based wood paint. The old chair is also beech, and I scraped off the old varnish and gave it a few coats of danish oil and replaced the seat with a new bit of plywood.

And a job from a month or so back, made a little table to put my speaker on as it was sat on the mantle before which was a bit too low down.

Fine restoration work on this antique 1830-1837 sabre:

sYFkWEMl.jpg
YTjNXYnl.jpg
ArB5znXl.jpg

The process involved evening out the patina on the brass, carefully polishing the gold plating, feeding the shagreen and reseating the copper twist-wire, cleaning off the old polishing compound residue from the hilt's recesses and lots of oiling.

What a gorgeous day! Cut grass before it turns into the Amazon Rainforest and weeds become taller than me. My mower needs attention. Fuel was literally ******* out from splits in rubber fuel pipe, had to cut piece off.
20200416-132404.jpg

Still leaking but much slower, enough to get grass cut before all fuel is leaked. Carburettor needs attention I think it's blocked. Probably could use a new spark plug, took a few pulls to start. Anyone know where I can buy a new rubber pipe and spark plug for an old lawnchief with Tecumseh Vantage 35? I don't suppose any high street shop will sell them.

20200416-132730.jpg

Can see leaking pipe here. I cut it and reattached at the top right end in photo. It was a very tight fit to get it on. Maybe I should put the metal clip back, that should stop any leaks I guess.

20200416-132738.jpg

Anyway, before cutting,

20200416-122210.jpg

And after. Just some weeding to do and put bird bath and feeders back. One day I'll get a new lawn. That broken end fence panel is my neighbour's and he's getting it replaced.

Halfords have fuel line.

Interesting. Yes just been on their website and they do have fuel lines. Not sure if they're ok for lawnmowers. They do them in 6, 8 and 10mm I guess you mean this? https://www.halfords.com/tools/fuse...gs/halfords-fuel-hose-6mm-hfh401-316455.htmlJ

I noticed they sell lawnmower spark plugs. Is it likely to say on my spark plug what thread diameter or gap size I'd need?
Yep I've used the 13/19mm stuff in a pinch for testing water cooling parts in PCs! It's quite stiff, the smaller stuff may be more flexible.

Not sure about spark plugs - first step is probably to pull it and read any labels or marks, to see what's in there now.

Nice one, thanks. I'll take the piece of hose I cut off into Halfords (whenever they reopen) to try and match the diameter I need. And I'll take a look at the spark plug for any markings. I'm also thinking maybe I should replace the oil, don't think it's ever been replaced.

Think Halfords are open although it sounds like a click and collect type setup!

Yeah most likely I won't be able to walk into a store.
Just pulled out the spark plug, it's a Champion RJ19LM. There's an imprinted number 482 below that. I mean it wasn't a terrible start up. Sometimes it takes up to 20 pulls if it hasn't been used for ages. This time, having not been used since September, it took about 6 or 7 pulls. But will be nice if it starts in 2 or 3.

Man job fail:mad:. Ice been slowly swapping switches and sockets to some nice chrome ones. Came to do a fused switch (again) and I cannot get the 3x2.5mm^2 cables to stay in the neutral terminal, lives fine (also with 3) but for some reason I can tighten the neutral but as soon as I give it a tug (:D) it pops out (also:D). I'm getting g an extension built so I'm going to get the electricity to change the ones that I'm struggling with. I think I scared the kids with my language though:p. Doesn't help that I'm at a funny angle due to wall units.

That plug looks in decent condition. Make sure that the cap and HT lead aren’t loose and that there’s no crud inside the cap.

Any fuel hose of the same diameter will be fine as lawnmowers have mavity fed fuel systems. You need the sprung clips or very small jubilee clips to keep the hose in place.

Be very careful tightening up jubilee clips on those plastic parts as they can get brittle with age. Use just thumb and finger grip on your screwdriver.

Loads of people on eBay selling Tecumseh spares and they do have U.K. dealers if you don’t fancy waiting weeks for parts to arrive from the USA.

Thanks mate. I'll check for crud in the cap. Any particular spray or oil to use for cleaning it? Maybe I should buy a gapping tool and make sure the sparkplug electrode gap is correct? It's meant to be 0.30. And perhaps some sandpaper to clean up blackening of the electrode.

I suppose starting the engine can also be to do with the float/needle getting stuck in the carburettor which I'll unscrew and look at. Need to check o-rings too. Also, old sponge air filter and engine oil could inhibit the engine starting efficiently? I've found an ebay link for the exact air filter for my vantage 35 engine, and I'm going to tip out old oil and replace with fresh SAE30.
