Only X570 and B550 motherboards will support Zen 3 CPU's

@Joxeon

TR4 same socket, just pins moved around, aka what intel did with 6th/7th Gen to 8/9th for increased core count

So, what makes the new sTRX4 socket incompatible with older Threadrippers despite sporting the same 4094 pin arrangement? AMD took to Reddit to explain this. Although the pins are the same, "the mapping of those pins to voltage or data will be different this time 'round"

Have a feeling Ryzen has evolved so much for them, they reached the limit of the sockets pretty quickly .

Looking at the VRM set up of b550, makes you wonder if b450 will hold up in the future . Increase on power delivery is huge !

Personally hoping for 5 core CCX units next time around, 5/10/15/20 cores CPUs :)

this could backfire on amd just as it did with intel. if you force someone into a mobo replacement then all options are on the table. and when intel start making something decent those on amds 400 series chipset and below may just jump back over to the blue side.

Very true.

But more importantly, from the very first day AMD told us that the AM4 platform would see 4 generations of CPU. Buyers made buying choices with that in mind.

Right now, B450 boards are still being sold as the B550 isn't here to replace it. Buyers need to be told that it is now a dead platform or they are being misinformed.

there is still the possibility that msi 400 series max boards may well end up supporting 4000 series cpu. if so then things will get very interesting.

Oh dear. So many people thought it was a good idea to buy a B450 Tomahawk Max over an X570... I argued it wasn't due to PCI-E 4 support.

I know if I had bought one I'd be furious right now. Only upgraded a month ago.

I nearly went with a B450 and despite going with the 3900X, in the back of my mind I kind of placed an even greater value/level of importance on the motherboard. Glad I did.

B450 is just a cheaper X470. I.e it was last gen and built for the Ryzen 2000 series CPUs. It was a bit short sighted to think that it was a good purchase, let alone the lack of PCI-E 4 for next gen IO and GPUs.

I know it's 50% cheaper, but to now get support for the 4000 series or if there are significant gains from PCI-E 4 for GPUs, those that bought B450 boards have to buy again if they want to take advantage.

Logically it also had a higher percentage chance of not being supported by motherboard manufactures and AMD due to it's age. Not in a million years would AMD dare drop support for X570 so it was a much safer bet.

For me this isn't as big an issue as Intel, because there's no ME that forcibly shuts down with an unsupported CPU. AMD won't forbid anyone doing this in 450/470 boards, even if it means dropping Zen and Zen+ to have enough flash capacity. I could see two BIOS versions coming because demand is going to be pretty high. Intel instructed Asus that they were not allowed to hax Coffee into Skylake boards, even though they could have done it.

its not that the motherboards have small bios memory. its that the bloat that is in the bios that takes up the space. if they used the old award / american megatrends style bios they would fit everything in in less than half the space lol.

First few minutes of this video sums it up well:

3m20s on: AMD won't be suppling the microcode required for Zen 3 on B450 boards, so even if the board manufacturers want to provide support (MSI Max boards have a big enough BIOS flash), they won't be able to.

Early days though, things can change.

Indeed - got to fit all those graphics in somehow!

I didn't watch the video, but I shouldn't think that'll stop Asus/MSI from doing it.

Doing so could be in breach of their agreements with AMD as they would essentially be using unauthorised code to do so. Still, we don't have enough information this early on, we'll see how it develops.

Could be, but that would be unusual for AMD, 1st gen boards weren't supposed to support Zen 2, yet most of them do. Admittedly 1st and 2nd gen boards were really similar and I'm not sure how similar B550 will be to B450.

The way the bios is headding its gonna end up being its own full on operating system. Some even have web access in them lol. Madness.

What about the news regarding the new 550 motherboards only compatible with the 3000 series? That would be a massive letdown. One generation motherboard...

B550 doesn't look very appealing especially if his prices are accurate, and the board will be obsolete by Zen4, i honestly see Zen3 being the worst selling gen for Ryzen.
