Configurable buttons is a neat idea. Would probably be cheaper and more convenient to have more buttons though.
I like buttons.
Touch screens can die in a fire. Like any driver who tries to use them when driving likely will.

You can have a mixture of the two...
A lot of the things you mentioned come under "set and forget settings" like I said.
Cameras can go in there too because you only use them when parking etc. And the camera screen can automatically come on when you put it in reverse etc.

I said the camera screen, as in the camera interface. Unless there are 17 seperate screens for all the top down 3d seeing round corners periscopic night vision heat sensing 300fps HDR spy cameras?

The most common and important things on stalks. Like wiper intensity, for example.
The touchscreen in the new Disco Sport and my A6 are both fairly frustrating to use TBH. I much prefer the iDrive approach.

Touchscreens are last millennium. It's last millennium's idea of the future. But (except for mobile devices) touchscreens are pretty much dead in the IT world.
