So at a time of everyone complaining about "white privilege" and systemic racism, the department of justice has found that Yale university is systemically racist towards white and asian students!

The US government says Yale University is illegally discriminating against white and Asian-American applicants.

The results of a two-year investigation by the Department of Justice found the Ivy League university had breached civil rights law in its undergraduate admissions process.

The department threatened to file a lawsuit against the university if it failed to take "remedial" measures.

Interesting that you didn't include the whole story. Oh, what's this? Bigly Boy doesn't like something Obama did? Who would have guessed?

President Donald Trump's administration has been a strong opponent of so-called affirmative action.

The programmes, which were supported by former President Barack Obama, seek to boost admissions of under-represented minorities, particularly Hispanics and African-Americans..
The Department of Justice's report, published on Thursday, said that while the Supreme Court allows universities that receive taxpayer funding to use race as "one of a number of factors" during admissions, "Yale's use of race is anything but limited".

"Yale uses race at multiple steps of its admissions process resulting in a multiplied effect of race on an applicant's likelihood of admission," it said.

Yale strongly rejected the report's conclusions, which it said had been made before the university was able to provide all of the information requested by the Department of Justice.

"Had the Department fully received and fairly weighed this information, it would have concluded that Yale's practices absolutely comply with decades of Supreme Court precedent," Yale said in a statement.

The university said it considers a many factors during the admissions process and said it would not change its process "on the basis of such a meritless, hasty accusation."

Last year, Harvard University was cleared of discrimination against Asian-American applicants by a federal judge following a lawsuit, although the ruling is now being appealed.

LoL'.....before the university was able to provide all of the information'. They had two years to provide this!

Old news tbf, it's been widely known that universities have been discriminating against students based on race for years now.

Yeah that's a fair point, the whole affirmative action thing is fundamentally racist and harms minorities who are placed into a university they are not qualified for so end up dropping out.

It’s pretty much an open secret that they do this, in fact California lawmakers are actively trying to change their state constitution in order to allow for discrimination based on race (hmm wonder if that could backfire) as it’s currently illegal for their state owned colleges to do so. Unsurprisingly UC Berkeley has a high portion of Asian students currently, Ivy League schools however clearly suppress their Asian intake and artificially inflate the numbers of Black and Latino students with a healthy dose of tokenism/low expectations.

The irony is that it’s mostly superficial, majority of the black students at Harvard aren’t proper “African Americans” or descendants of American slaves but rather the descendants of more recent immigrants. Unsurprisingly the son/daughter of say a Nigerian Engineer and Doctor who emigrated together as highly skilled workers can get in, especially with lowered requirements based on their race.

Of those who actually are African American they’re likely mostly a bit better off than usual... middle class, from suburbs etc..

Most of this isn’t going to help any poor kid from South Chicago or Detroit, it’s just visible race based diversity as a box ticking exercise and involves throwing Asian students under the bus to achieve it.

They don’t actually care about any sort of fairness etc... plenty of white students who do get in are legacy students, parents were say Harvard grads too and in some cases left a hefty donation and made sure the dean knows about it so their son/daughter’s application gets processed correctly. In extreme cases where the son/daughter is very mediocre parents might need to pay for an entire building!

Such an ordeal, I hope they get good job at the end .

Lol

And to think this is actually one of the few cases of a clear, real world example of “systemic racism” that people sometimes like to refer to.

Not emptyquoting

A court case will clear this up, accusations aren't worth anything from the US government.

The link says Asians as well, conveniently missed in the thread title.

Yes, conveniently.

Anyway, I'm continually surprised at the idea that emulating the rhetoric from the extremities of one's opponents is seen as a viable tactic, I guess rising above it is too much effort even though electorally it would be a consistently successful path to power. History appears to show that such nonintellectual discourse ends up defeating the very thing the reactionaries were fighting for, a pitiable affair.

If you read the first few words of the opening post (maybe asking too much?) this thread is referencing the article to contrast the current overwhelmingly popular ideology pushing the belief that white privilege exists.

Funny how those that find the lack of reference being made to discrimination against Asians offensive and/or problematic here have absolutely no problem with a statement like "Black Lives Matter" even when confronted with statistics showing that the issues in question aren't isolated to black people. It's almost as if it's one rule for one group but not for another...

The BCC has some awful journalism, like the worlds fastest violin player who actually isn't playing a violin.

I'm so glad I have not ever paid for a TV licence, funding these organisations is deplorable.

I'm all for dismantling big government, socialist services like the BBC should be consigned to oblivion, money should be in our pockets not funding public entertainment services.

Can anything be fundamentally less independent than an organisation run by the government?

Agreed, OP.

Except for when I can regurgitate a passage from an article on something I agree with, of course.

Also, just for extra lols as there is some delightful synergy with that final quote of yours, the US DoJ is a branch of the executive. That means it is an organisation run by the government and you're absolutely right, it's as bent as a nine bob note. :)

Maybe it's because they are being earnest when they say they don't like racism and simultaneously don't have that weird projection that 'Black Lives Matter' means that other lives don't?

People get really damn weird about Black Lives Matter as a concept and it makes absolutely no sense. It's the equivalent of saying somebody who donates to a prostate cancer charity is a mysogynist because it doesn't also fund research into cervical cancer.
