To be honest, in the past, I used to love getting a new phone as much as the next guy. New toys and all that.

I'm still on 2XL, and will probably continue to do so unless the 5 gives a very substantial camera upgrade (I want UW and zoom capability).

Phones are boring AF these days anyway. We have definitely reached peak smartphone now, so the desire to pay silly money for one is just no longer there for me.
 
To be fair I think we may have reached peak smartphones few years ago.

Thinking about it, my S7 Edge was released in 2016 and had a 1440p AMOLED, IP68 rating, 4k30 recording, wireless charging and headphone jack :p

Only real innovation for me and reason I wanted to upgrade was multiple cameras for different shooting scenarios and the more up to date all screen designs.

Not even fussed about latest SoC as I never game on my phones so happy as long as there's a smooth user experience, which is where the higher refresh panels come in. Those were probably the biggest innovation over last year and next big thing will probably be under screen selfie cameras.

This is where Google are probably going to start striking gold in the mobile phone market, the more mid range offerings. Pixel 5 is shaping up nicely, even with 765G SoC rumours as I'm sure they'll keep the Neural Core (or whatever they call it) chips to help with computational photography.

Yup, which is why I find it even more amusing that £350+ phones still don't have wireless charging or water proofing.......

My job seems safe enough at the moment and I am very fortunate to be comfortable how I live. At the end of the day my bills & mortgage come in at £1600 a month. I am definitely looking to reduce that and cut back on some luxury monthly outgoings. So have pretty much decided to go SIM only.

I may well still get the 5 but if I do it will be outright.

Finally got my 4 XL , i got a pretty good deal for a 64Gb version at £467 brand new. Its updating and charging at the moment. Returned the OP Nord as i didnt feel the camera wasnt good enough and also missed wireless charging

So Mobiles have the regular 4, nothing upfront, 50gb with £96 cashback, effectively making it £744.

Would be cheaper than going SIM/buying outright.

Tempted I have to say.
 
If you don't want to pay a lump sum for it, can also get the regular 4 from Voxi for £18 a month (30 months) and then whatever SIM only on top.

As above though, battery on the regular version looks tragic.

In all seriousness though, just looking at it from a financial POV, I’d stand to be up quite a wedge by going for this deal and would make quite a difference for me as we head into uncertain times in the next few months/next year.

I do appreciate what the reviews/people have said but if I get 5 hours SoT, I’d say for my usage that would be fine.
 
It is up to you, when I did my research it really didn't look good and 5 hours SoT may be the best case scenario and that's with some features turned off. GSMArena gave it a lower battery rating than my S10e and that lasts me half a day, so do your own research.
 
Accubattery says my regular Pixel 4 could go 5hr 55mins with screen on, or 16hr 56mins combined use. Off charge at 6am, I'm going to the gym this morning, listening to BT music all through, about 1½ hours and then the walk home, I'll likely be between 50-60% by around 11am, but I will then put it on charge for 30 mins, be back up in the 90's and fine for the day. No, it's not great, but I've not once actually ran out of battery.

Are you still using the 4 as your daily Andy? Still enjoying using it?
 
Yup and yup :) It's funny, I'm taking stock of my devices, with a plan to move some on (I have 8 at the mo... :( ) and I was tempted to go back to the OP8P, but I think it's just too big when you jog, cycle and go the gym a lot like I do these days.

FYI, gym done, still listening to BT music and I'm at 59%.

I think that’s it. You should always get the phone that best suits your needs/lifestyle. And now you know that as your continuing your new healthy lifestyle (major props by the way), that the 5.8” sized phones might be one of the main criteria you go for when it comes to your daily driver.
 
So those who usually buy the Pixel but might not be happy with what the Pixel 5 offers, what do you think your next device will be?

On one hand, I couldn't care less if the Pixel 5 uses a 765G chip as long as the general UI performance is good but there's rumours the Pixel 5 will regress in certain areas or won't improve on the 4 where it needs to.

Regression:
Rumour is it will ditch face unlock, which I just can't get my head around. Regardless if you like face unlock or not, you can't deny that having it one year and not the next makes it come across as if there's no direction for Google's hardware. Apple are great here, they took away touch ID (except for on cheaper devices like the SE) and just went all in.

It still baffles me that there's been no software update for the P4 that allows face unlock whilst wearing a mask, Apple got this out of the door straight away.

Areas that aren't looking to be improved.
Battery, the phone is rumoured to have around a 3,000mAh battery which is still small. I'm not having as many issues with my P4 battery wise but I'm sure that's down to staying in more and being around a power source - just add a bigger battery in, surely without the face recognition or soli hardware there's additional room?

The renders I've seen still show two lenses which means either they're sticking to wide and telephoto, or they're moving to wide and ultra wide. Why not have all three?

For me there's nowhere to go! One Plus are potentially the closest but I don't want a curved screen and their new OneUI "inspired" UI looks awful - the fact they used to be close to stock Android was one of their plus points.

Not interested in Samsung as their phones are full of bloat, OneUI looks like it was designed by someone who was only given PowerPoint and the rounded rectangle shape too to use, and I'm not waiting +9months for a new version of Android to hit my phone.

I'm leaning towards Apple but Siri just isn't a patch on Google Assistant, CarPlay is shocking because of Siri and Apples OCD control of the platform where Google Maps can't follow its own UI. Then there's the closed garden, resulting in no 3rd party browser being allowed to use their own rendering engine. The Apple watch though...
 
i really dont understand why you think we're upset with the p5 when it's not given a single piece of information confirmed. tbh i'm more excited for the p5 than i've ever been before for a pixel phone, thanks to the 4a. make the 4a, but premium and i'm happy.
