**** The Official Google Pixel 4 Thread ****

With Samsung confirming 3 years of guaranteed support/big updates from the gs 10 onward, the likes of a GS 10e are far more attractive again, as well as maybe a second hand GS 20

Wasn't that the case anyway with 2 years major upgrades and the quarterly security updates or they confirmed this will be for major builds too?

The deal breaker for me is it not having basic things, which should be common place now, I would love to have wireless charging and for it to be fully water proof like my GS 8 from 3 years ago.... even if it meant for an extra £20 on top....

The sad thing is, the pixel 5 will most likely have wireless charging and be water proof but chances are the screen will be larger than 6" too.....

They put that stuff in (like they did with the 4), the price of the device then goes up and therefore the value that the 4a represents is gone. No way would you be able to get that stuff in there for £20 extra. These are midrange phones for a reason.

Not even the Nord (which many seem to believe is better than the 4a) has wireless charging, nor does it have an IP rating.

Samsung only guaranteed 2 years of big updates and I think an additional 2 years for security updates, now 3 years of big updates is guaranteed for the GS 10 upwards and probably an additional 1 or 2 years of security updates after that.

Wireless charging doesn't cost that much extra to add, how long has it been around for now..... Water proof/IP rating, fair enough, that might bulk the cost up a bit, although they could at least add some kind of official resistance.

Given how good wireless earbuds are now, that and the headphone jack is practically dead anyway, I would rather they had removed the headphone jack and added the above 2 instead, this in return would also offer more water protection/resistance.

I would guess most people in this tech forum won't have the same phone for 3 years.

Nowadays I think more and more people are keeping phones for a lot longer given the small incremental upgrades and the ever increasing cost of "flagship" phones.

Literally the only thing that seems to be improving somewhat drastically is the camera and if you consider 120HZ to be the next big thing. We're at the point of diminishing returns with CPU/GPU and RAM, have been for the past year or 2 now. Battery life is still much the same as it has been for the last 5-7 years i.e. expect a day or 2 at most with heavy usage and no more.

Literally the only reason I am looking for an upgrade to the GS 8 now is because security updates will be coming to an end early next year.

I think you’re missing the point for this phone’s existence. It’s not here to have everything you’ve listed above. You want that, you have to pay the extra.

Ah that's good to know but I'm already looking to get rid of my S10e as the battery is trash with their Exynos vodoo, otherwise be keeping it for at least another year.

Pixel 4a was literally a UWA lens away from me buying it, but hopefully Pixel 5 shapes up well.

I thought that was true for myself, yet here I am with 2xl all these years later. I only really want a pixel and 3/4 have been pants.

Snap. Always upgraded every year but still on the pixel 2. Still feels fast and does what I need. Looks ancient mind. Think it did when it came out :p

Tried 3 phones to replace it and never thought they justified the costs.

Guess I'm in the minority that wouldn't mind a headphone jack. I get no benefits from my head/earphones being wireless and a couple of negatives but mainly that it costs about 3 times as much for comparable sound quality

Hello, isn't there another big factor : size?

The Nord is bigger and the 4a smaller. I would even prefer iPhone SE size, they could make a Pixel SE edition charge £100 more and I would still buy it!

Pixel 4a - know it's madness to a degree, but gonna grab one to save my sanity and replace Mrs w's S10+... wish we'd never picked that one up really.

Samsung have completely lost the plot when it comes to phones. Their latest mantra seems to be "pack our phones with hardware that looks impressive on paper, but doesn't offer a good user experience"

Take the S20 Ultra for example: The main sensor which was physically big came with the physical side effects of a larger sensor such as shallow DOF, and a larger sensor to have to focus across. Both of these things combined lead to focus being an issue. Not to mention the absolutely pointless 100x zoom. If this doesn't tell you that Samsung are neither researching what users want nor testing their devices before release, I don't know what will.

I was interested in the Galaxy Watch 3 until it turns out it has the exact same SoC as the original Galaxy Watch but has a smaller battery. Fair enough it has more tracking hardware (ECG, SpO2 and more HR photodiodes) but I don't think these things are worth the considerable Premium the GW3 is charging. Not when the Active line has some of those additional tracking features.

Yep, this is why I haven't bought a samsung in ages.

So like is there any reason to get a 4XL over the 4a at this point given what we know?

I’m obviously a fan of the 4a, but I see that Clearly White version and it’s a thing of beauty. I know I‘lll be able to get a good contract deal on it come September.

My 4 XL is still holding up well. I will wait and see what the 5 offers. Tempted to go SIM only and keep the Mrs on the 3xl and me on the 4xl

Spending £80 a month on contracts which is fine but you know with strange times ahead maybe it's wise I get off the latest phone trend
