Which is classic marketing. Limit supply artificially to make it sound like you need to get it now,and get tons of people pre-ordering meaning companies can pay for production beforehand, etc. People see "out of stock" and think EVERYONE is buying one,so panic and pre-order too,to keep up. It also means ASP increases.

It may well be classic marketing, and its gonna work too, if the flurry of activity on here is anything to go by. Hence, AMD need to counter and do it quickly.

Maybe, but then as I got older,I realised the tricks and don't fall for them. I also suspect,if AMD launched earlier, people would wait for Nvidia. It happened in the past. But then I am the kind of person who bothered to try Crysis first on an X1900GT to see how far I could get,and then decided to get a new GPU. Didn't even pre-order a GPU for Crysis! :P

I don't pretend to know the ins and outs of what goes on in tech companies.

But, if I was AMD now, seeing the launch, the cards being publicised, and the flurry of activity with lots of people saying "yep, that'll do", then surely they would be sitting thinking "crap, better put something out". Because if they don't, then lots of people are just going to buy the 3080. And even if the AMD card turns out better, not many will sell up and switch after only a couple of months.

Now that Nvidia have launched, surely AMD, if they have an ounce of sense, would have been prepared to counter immediately and to take their limelight?

Why do people think AMD aren't going to say anything? It's not even been 24 hours yet. With "Poor Volta", "Overclocker's Dream" and "Jebaited" still flying around the mindshare, do you people really want AMD to spew some unfounded tripe out again in a hurry just because "YOU GOTTA SAY SOMETHING NAO!!!"

Or, would you rather a proper, controlled response for a change? Koduri and his ******** have left the building, you're not going to get comment for comment sake.

You cannot buy Ampere for another 15 days. You can't even pre-order this time. And contrary to what Gibbo posed, I doubt availability is going to be fantastic at first because Samsung 8nm is just a rubbish node with rubbish yields. There is still 2 weeks before any money can even change hands, and all those ill-controlled ADHD nutters who MUST HAVE IT IMMEDIATELY have already made their minds up and won't be swayed.

If AMD still haven't said anything this time next week then start shouting at the clouds.

IF they have something better than Nvidia, isn't now the best time? They could really steal the limelight that nvidia are current amassing at a very fast rate.

People are making their minds up now, planning their builds now, considering buying PSU's etc, now.

Signal to noise ratio. Nobody is listening, they're too busy drooling over the shiny. The only people who would actually listen are people who are already waiting. So what's the rush? Get some actual substance to show, unlike the stunningly-polished vapour Uncle Leather Jacket showed us.

Then those people are stupid. Like I said, they're already settled on Nvidia and nothing from AMD will change their minds. And there is nothing in a planned build that couldn't be transplanted to an AMD GPU anyway IF they do take notice and change their minds.

I would recommend skimming the last few pages. There's no reason for AMD to say anything immediately. They've already lost some sales by simply not being first, and nothing short of announcing a generational leap over Ampere is going to change that.

This is what Apple and Samsung do for the phones - make people panic and stand in lines overnight scared they can't get the phone. Wait a month or two,and you get the phone cheaper, with freebies from the comfort of your own home.

Yet,it does not work at all for the commercial customers, who get enough of the products beforehand at an agreed price.

I do sympathise with someone who has a real need for an upgrade especially when they stuck 2 fingers up at Turing.

I'll wait for AMD if I hear about 80 CUs in the coming weeks otherwise I'm frankly going to assume they are going smaller die with everything that entails. For me AMD need a part faster than a 3080 with more memory for me to be interested....

I'll just sit here and wait nicely for AMD announcements, I really don't get the I've got to have now thing, but that's just me. For me, I'm running a 5700XT, I'll probably stay AMD because they've never ripped me off or tried to and I don't like the way nVidia has worked for the past 3 years artifically hiking prices with no competitionm, yes it's business, however the shafting they've done and now cause panic to their supporters who have 2080 and above cards now being worth peanuts, I don't like that way of working. So, for me, I'll sit and wait for AMD. If AMD doesn't offer what I want, then I'll either go nVidia or keep my 5700Xt for a while... for me, it's a GPU my life won't be any worse off for a few more weeks of wait.

However, on the think around what AMD should do... personally they already probably know they've lost the war on performance king before last night... they'll be mopping up, however one thing I don't think they counted on was the price of the 3000 series which really probably throws a spanner in the works but epic for us the end users... I think the 6700XT would have to be now released at £399 to get sales judging by what we have and would need to be around 3070 performance... that's the best I believe we can hope for, i'd be very surprised if their new offereing got anywhere near 3080 tbh.

Nvidia is using a less dense process with worse power characteristics. AMD is using a denser process with better power characteristics which can run at higher switching frequencies. This is why the TDP and power constrained consoles are running at 1.8GHZ fixed clockspeed(XBox Series X),and upto 2.23GHZ(PS5).

So if AMD can run its cores at higher clockspeeds, than Nvidia, they could actually get closer in performance with a smaller die,and less CUs than expected. This is why until we get more actual information about the core configs, clockspeeds, memory bandwidth, etc it will be harder to say how these GPUs will compare. It looks like Nvidia has gone wider and slower this generation, probably to get over the fact Samsung 8NM does not have the power savings associated with a proper 7NM process node. In fact,if you look at the last few years,Nvidia has gone with higher clocked designs like Turing, and AMD has gone with more shaders, clocked lower.

If they release a 6700XT @ £400, which beats the 3070 I'll be very suprised. I want it. But I'll be suprised.

But if they don't, then I'll move to Nvidia which will be the first time in over 10 years! I can't even remember the last Nvida card I had? 8800 of some description I think....

Samsung 8nm has two issues, one is yields and then the other is higher power.
It then didnt help adding gddr6X due to added power.
The benefit of tsmc for AMD allows them to leverage the node better both power and efficiency.

Now its just a waiting game until amd spills the beans

Nope, why would they want to do that? Clearly it has been established that does them no good.

They have had ages to be ready to say something. If they are launching in 1-2 months they should pretty much know what's what I would imagine?

My position is, they need to say something in the next 14 days. If not then they are not doing themselves any favors, unless something has gone wrong and they do not want to say.

Signal to noise ratio. Nobody is listening, they're too busy drooling over the shiny.
Now this makes sense. Waiting a week or so for things to cool down would be good. But they should announce a date for this soon.

nVidia considered yields/availability and cost effectiveness when choosing what process to use - bar disruption due to the COVID-19 situation there shouldn't be any significant shortages due to yields.

Hopefully RTG does not screw up the launch!! :P

I reckon people are getting too excited without actually thinking about what they actually need the card for. I bought my 5700XT 7 months ago but all I use it for is playing League of Legends so kind of wasted money in hindsight. I am playing Horizon Zero Dawn now so not all bad.

There will be many who buy on day 1 but then play games which hardly use any of the power. Best to wait until AMD reveal their hand and then decide. A price war will get you the best deal in the long run.

Of course Nvidia fans will not buy AMD anyway so they will be the early adopters Nvidia is going to shaft once they announce the Ti or Super models 6 months later.

I'm impressed AMD have been so silent. It shows things have changed internally. As they showed with Ryzen, it's not about being the fastest it's being the best option at a price point. I'd leave the £500+ market to Nvidia, it's a niche of a niche. Offer great performance at each of the lower price points and clean up. It only seems to be the x70 series up, leet gamer types who have a manufacturer fetish.

If AMD can sell systems with a 3600/4600 Ryzen CPU and a great value £2-300 GPU I don't think most people will care.

I agree with this... kinda sit back and see what you play and what res ... also what power supply you have and CPU etc.... running some old quad core ain't gonna cut it... although saying that with the new interface maybe CPU bottlenecks will become a thing of the past now????

if people are running 1080P, forget upgraces abosolute waste of money imho... but those who want those 1500-200fps maxed in 4k... this is what these cards are now targetting... it's the first true jump I think in around 5 years now where we're now pushing that gamers will and can run mega fps at 4k instead of having to reduce res down to 1080p which lets be honest has had it's day! It's took long enough...
