the alternative is to skip multiple series then its not so painfulIt's been the same for years though. You should either go 80 to 80 every series or ti to ti. Once you start mixing between the two then it gets expensive.
Each to own but they are coming out higher than previous 3 generations until the 20XX series, which got widley critised for being over priced. These new cards come out at the same MSRP to their 20XX series and people praising like we have the old pricing scheme back that has been in place for well over a decade. I am not even saying the price to perfomance isn't good tbh.
Nvidia could have just as easily released these as the 3080 & 3080Ti rather than 3070 & 3080 tbh and they would likely have shown 20-30% performance over previous gen with that naming, however this new pricing and naming level is pushing the whole product stack up a level and that is the point.
But pre order/order what? pre order a vanilla AIB, a top of the range AIB and a FE 3080 so pay for three cards, then read reviews and return two cards (or even all three as you realise you do need the 3090 afterall which isnt out until the following week?
And what happens if the AIB you pick is the lemon card compared with other manufacturers but by the time you have read the reviews, all the other ones have sold out?
Would be much better if the reviews were all out the day before.
Are they? Maybe for every game out now but what about the next 2 years?
And is that 4k 60fps rock solid with RT on?
Going to be gaming on a 120Hz screen as well so some fps between 60 and 120 would be nice.
But yeah, you are probably right about the 3090 and going 3080 now then upgrading next year.
Jensen is letting us use our NVME storage as vram.
Sounds like we will be on the next gen cards before this is commonly used tech.
Taken from the Reddit Q&A Site:
Why only 10 GB of memory for RTX 3080? How was that determined to be a sufficient number, when it is stagnant from the previous generation?
[Justin Walker] We’re constantly analyzing memory requirements of the latest games and regularly review with game developers to understand their memory needs for current and upcoming games. The goal of 3080 is to give you great performance at up to 4k resolution with all the settings maxed out at the best possible price.
In order to do this, you need a very powerful GPU with high speed memory and enough memory to meet the needs of the games. A few examples - if you look at Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Metro Exodus, Wolfenstein Youngblood, Gears of War 5, Borderlands 3 and Red Dead Redemption 2 running on a 3080 at 4k with Max settings (including any applicable high res texture packs) and RTX On, when the game supports it, you get in the range of 60-100fps and use anywhere from 4GB to 6GB of memory.
Extra memory is always nice to have but it would increase the price of the graphics card, so we need to find the right balance.
The ram issue depends how long you want to keep the card a year or two you should be fine, 4 years plus then you more likely will have a problem.
Yup. Someone else posted this earlier. Nvidia claim the 3080 can do 60-100 fps at 4k with high res and RTX on.
it says "Red Dead Redemption 2, Control, Borderlands 3 for example are closer to 4k 60fps with maxed out settings."

Better silicon. Surely this has got to be the reason? Why is it I can undervault and overclock my Ryzen 3600 and someone like humbug can’t overclock his to save his life? Silicon quality. They are obviously binning the best cores and the 3090 is getting them in order to keep voltage lower.Yes i dont understand why the 3080 is so power hungry and the 3090 is so big yet it only uses 20watts more?

Sorry i dont understand. The 1080 came out in 2016 for $699, the 980 came out in 2014 for $599 and the 970TI in 2013 for $699. The 3080 is now released at $699 (£649) with a 60 to 70% performance gain in non RT games at 4k, so i cannot see massive price increases over the last 3 generations but i do see huge performance gains
