That's not really much different to all the stupid SUVs you see with a 'Sport' badge on the back.
Like a Discovery Sport......how the F is a car like that going to be remotely 'sporty'?! But idiots still buy them.
Yeah, it's almost like people buy cars for their practicality/looks/brand/speed not their name. Mental.

No it's idiotic that manufacturers label their cars in stupid ways.
Because you can drive it out on the moor when going on a shoot, seems pretty sporty to me!
They aren't calling it "Sport" because the car is sporty, it's an implication that the car is aimed at a "sporty" lifestyle, ie, you can get your surfboard/kayak/spelunking/camping/shooting/snooker/chess set/hang gliding equipment in the back with ease and then drive it to the coast/lake/cave system/open field/farm/crucible/living room/airfield with ease.
No one is looking at a Discovery Sport and saying "Ahh, sports! This will be a fantastic car to hustle down my local B-roads!"

Its more sporty than the Discovery and its big square boot to carry your sports equipment, golf bags in the boot and 4 adults for a round of golf - and if you run a 5 aside sports team you can carry the whole team in one car.
Pretty simple really? If you do something properly sporty it generally doesn't involve using something with 4 wheels whilst you sit in a chair.
PS. a set of darts will fit in the glovebox too
If you are thinking even harder and wonder Y? Just take the y off the Discovery Sport name and its the biggest clue.
Maybe, but surely Discovery Sport is actually an example of one of the better named ones (after all, hiking, surfing etc etc are sports).

I've seen loads of the other 'pretend' 4x4s with Sport badges on the back. Are they all for going skiing and hiking in then? What's wrong with the normal un-sport badged versions?

Which 'pretend 4x4's are you thinking?
Taking your Discovery Sport example, the 'un-sport' badge would be 'Discovery', and there's already one of those, so that would be even more confusing

Sport = Tranverse engine (4cylinder) - 4.6m long car and 5+2 seating
Discovery = Longitundinal 6 cylinders 5.0m long car 7 seats and more off road capable and wonky numberplate.
