NVIDIA ‘Ampere’ 8nm Graphics Cards

So folks based on the latest information... a 3080 is around 20-30% faster than a 2080TI?
So a 3090 vs a 3080..... whats the "approximate" difference expected?

eteknix just announced the review embargo for the 3080 is now the 16th September - 2 days after release oO
Review embargo?
Does this mean no-one can give benchmark results / reviews for 2 days?
If so then i expect the 3080 will be a dumpling of a card and nothing like all the hype. Keep the hype and sales huge for 2 days until everyone finds out.
Hopefully not but a ‘review embargo’ seems crazy

Launch date is 17th.

Review embargo pushed to 16th, because of delays in getting cards to reviewers apparently.

It has 20% more CUDA cores compared to the 3080, but things don't usually scale linearly like that. The 2080 Ti had 48% more than the 2080, yet was nowhere near that in terms of the performance jump. It also had a relatively much wider memory bus compared to the lesser card, whereas the 3080 has been bumped to 320-bit, so that's another potential point of difference closed. I'd be surprised if it was more than 10-15% faster depending on the game.

/edit/ Also, a rather disappointing development:

For those out of the loop, this would have allowed virtual machines to use the GPU as if native without the need for a complicated passthrough process (and a second GPU).

Most companies do embargo's

Drivers aren't mature yet, probably want as much time as possible to work on them until they release to the wild with benchmarks.

Also its part of the marketting hype train.

Hype-related marketting has been proven to be very very very very successful.

It completely makes sense. Allows reviewers a good period to put together extensive reviews without the pressure of having to put out something incomplete and not being disadvantaged by other reviewers posts and videos going out before theirs.

Reviews coming out a day before release still works for me. Plenty of time to read through, watch through, research and make an informed decision.

Nice positive spin on the matter. Of course you could have just been sensible and bypassed the 2000 series and lost nothing, which would have paid for the 3080 ironically.

well hindsight is a wonderful thing. We could all bypass the 3000 series in the hope that the 4000 series is cheaper and better. In fact why stop there, maybe I’ll wait for the 5000. At the end of the day, people can spend their hard earned money how ever they like, value is decided by the buyer, not people judging on their purchases.

Indeed. Also, i'll eat my own nutsack if the 3070 "beats the RTX 2080Ti in performance"

I don't know who worded the last part. Whether that was TPU or Nvidia, but if it's already being downplayed as a high refresh 1440p card then it doesn't seem so amazing at £480 all of a sudden.

I mean look, any one who has chased the 4k dragon knows 8gb simply isn't enough for now, let alone future gen titles. We also know M$ are aiming for 4k 60 in a console (a whole machine with a 1tb NVME in !) for £450. All of a sudden Nvidia's promising doesn't sound so good to me.

It's just good cop bad cop. Turing was the bad cop, snarling at you and calling you names. Ampere? "There there, let me relieve you of another few hundred quid.. But be quick ! AMD and the consoles are coming !".

Ok with each passing day... Im getting confoozed.

Wouldnt it make more sense for 2080 TI users to simply pick up another 2080TI on the cheap and SLI?
Surely that would be better performance than a single 3080?

Im sure I am missing something overly obvious here.

Yes, SLI is dead.

I see you mean most companies games wont support SLI from now on?

Its upto developers to support it for DX12 onwards and most can't be arsed, still works in older games though. No idea if nvidia are still even bothering to actively support it for older games.
