NVIDIA ‘Ampere’ 8nm Graphics Cards

Does the Ampere launch give the lie to the statement we see on the forum that we represent a tiny niche when it comes to GPU buyers? Or is it that general consumers see the 3080 as better than the 2080Ti at a 'reasonable' price so want in? Or is the demand all down to the scalpers?

I think it comes down to 2 things:

  1. Nvidia only had 1 and a half months for manufacturing, this is across AIB cards as well so stock was never going to meet demand. You're talking thousands of cards hitting the market but there's hundreds of thousands of people wanting one.
  2. Scalpers (aka scum) bought a lot of the available stock at large, so what little stock was available was quickly taken up to be flipped for profit.
Like with all things, it will settle eventually and its just a matter of time... we're talking months though and not weeks.

Very true. I suppose we'll see in next year's Steam Hardware Survey results how much of an impact the cards have really made on the market.

Hey I tested freesync/gsync with the 3080 today and it works with my qled 2018 TV (q8dn)

So I'm happy to finally have that working on my TV.

Happy days. I know people couldnt get it working right with 10/20 series cards. I have a 2018 Q6FN... hopefully it works for me too.

Just watched this and it is spot on:

I have to say, the RT and Tensor core improvements have been a very disappointing. I was predicting double the performance. My thoughts were as RT and Tensor cores took up such small space on the die that they would double those, plus we would get improvement in efficiency. Instead we only got the latter and it is lacklustre.

All that said I do think the gap will get bigger between the 20 and 30 series in regards to RT and DLSS as new games get the most out of the 30 series improvements. But will never reach the 2x difference I was expecting. If hopper really is an MCM design I can see a huge increase at that point, but that is now 18-24 months away.

I'm buying in as I feel RT is usuable this gen, at least at 1440p.

Code:
Control: 1440p, DX12, High, High RT, TAA

   2080 35
   2080Ti 46
   3080 70

Metro Exodus: 1440p, DX12, Ultra, Ultra RT, TAA

   2080 51
   2080Ti 66
   3080 90

Battlefield 5: 1440p, DX12, Ultra, Ultra RT, TAA

   2080 70
   2080Ti 92
   3080 115

Quake 2: 1440p, RTX, Vulkan, Max Settings

   2080 31
   2080Ti 41
   3080 62

Battlefield 5 is an odd one as they drastically cut the amount of RT in game since launch.

It's viable at 1440p tho.
Yeah, but not the point, there should have been a bigger leap in RT and Tensor core performance imo. To the point where turning on RT does not lower fps in currently released games.

Of course it’s better, my point is it is not as good as I was expecting.

You expected better than up to 2x the performance of its predecessor the 2080?

I think the leap in RT performance from the 2080 to 3080 is pretty good

Am waiting to see the RT performance leap from the 2080ti to the 3090

Did you guys watch the hardware unboxed video I linked to? Basically I fully agree with what they are saying.

No, I ordered the ASUS TUF 3080 which looks better if you ask me.

The non OC version?

From my research it seems all the cards whether factory overclocked or not all pretty much perform within a few percent of each other.

I should just go for the cheaper TUF myself but the irrational part of my brain keeps pulling me towards the OC version.
