Can someone explain to me why the exchange rate ONLY affects the new GPUs and not every other computer component made in the East? Don't see the CPU prices fluctuating daily......
Because stock doesnt change as swiftly and its plentiful. Lets say they got 1000 cpus in at and they have already agreed the price of their next delivery in the next 2 months. That may be more but they dont need to alter the current price until stocks are sold. Doesnt matter what happens with the exchange rate.
Now l;ook at the 3080 launch.
They had so many cards i9n stock at a fixed agreed low price (rumour has it subsidised by Nvidia to -$50)
They also know what price their next deliver is coming in at and all deliveries for up to 6 weeks. These will have been agreed so really shouldnt be subject to exchange rate fluctuations.
After 6 weeks of stock, the price the distributor will be charging has not been agreed and nobody knows what the exchange rate will be.
I know one of ocuk rivals held the price until the first 6 weeks pre ordered stock had been sold but didnt pull the plug on pre orders until they got to January and then stopped as they felt they didnt want to gamble that the cards would end up costing them more than they charged. They still might lose out and make a loss on every card delivered in the 7 to 13 week window where they dont actually know how much they will be buying them in for.
Ocuk isnt taking that gamble and has increased the price so they know they will be covered. If they end up getting stock in Nov and Dec at the same price as day 1 stock then its just extra profit. If they go up or the exchange rate varies they are covered.
