House prices rose 7.3% this year, average now almost £250k

Well said.

I don't see the value in getting ahead and contributing to a toxic society where people view each other as walking $$$ signs. Because I'd simply rather not be a part of such a society in the first place.

Would rather go live penniless in the wilderness somewhere. As said many times, the only thing tying here is family, or I'd be off. The UK is getting more uncaring day by day, perfectly exemplified by our 100% uncaring government. We all just want to get rich (it seems). The limit of our empathy ends at the walls of our family home.

New Zealand mate. See you there!

@wez130 said he'll give us our first meal on the house :D

This is how you are justifying it to yourself. Did your education teach you to be a heartless money grabber as it certainly doesn't seem it was in anything constructive to society. :p

It's already been taxed enough. All the tax is doing is putting rents up.

The answer is not taxation that will just be passed down maybe not all of it but it will increase rent prices.

The mortgage interest rate relief being taken away 20% at a time hurt a lot of landlords. It's hundreds of pounds per month.

All that's done is make the government richer and tenants poorer

Evidently we have an angry ranter who can’t get on the ladder so blames BTL landlords and doesn’t understand the current system, or its recent changes.

..and anyone who is not self-employed literally is a tool for profit being paid for by a company.
I don't work for the private sector :p The public sector is a huge employer, especially down here.

One of the things I like about my job is that I'm quite literally working for the people. You can thank me later :p

Anyway, more generally, why is it that the UK alone has such trouble with providing good quality and affordable housing, when our most comparable neighbours on the continent do not seem to have any such difficulty.

They rent more but they have extremely good rights and protections for renters. They have rent caps. They have zero tolerance for bad landlords.

Yet in this country people say it can't be done. You simply have to let the market decide. Let the bubble inflate. Let people be priced out. Let things go to hell. Everything else is pure communism!

You don't see this mindset from continental Europeans..

Only ever hear good things about NZ. Mum's got relatives out there too...

You say it like it's the most common thing and the UK is missing a trick. The only places I can think that have them are Berlin, Ireland (failed), Paris (failed).

The same person who's never moved out of home for fear of renting and failed spectacularly to enact the "5 year plan to 50k" as he wanted a house cat?
Doubt it :D

HAD I the heavens’ embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.

Well a ticket to Berlin is like £50 do you need a forum whip round to get you a one way ticket to your new life in heaven? If not then what are you waiting for?

Have you ever lived in another country Foxeye ?
Nope. Does that matter?

It's not like I can't either talk to people I know who have, or use this wonderful invention called the internet to tell me what the housing market is like elsewhere.

Like I said (repeatedly) family is the only thing keeping me here or I would 100% be gone. Just don't like the British mentality much, truth be told.

A nation stuffed with self-centred, arrogant, aggressive, selfish, destructive prats. Who would mostly throw each other under a bus if somebody paid them to do it.

For the same reason I refuse to pay scalpers for a GPU, I refuse to pay BTL landlords anything at all.

Would rather burn my money then use it to enrich you lot.

GPU scalpers. It really does sound like communism is what your ideal world is.

You are completely against free markets and completely in denial. You even work for the government (public sector).

I wonder if there is any correlation between people brushing off GPU scalpers and them also being property magnates :D
There's your answer ;) People sure do love their capitalism without limits.

Having said that tho, it's OK for the govt to engage in "corporate socialism" or prop up the housing market bubble. That's good govt interference.

But social housing? No, that's too much like communism :p

The irony is palpable.
