Car terminology that makes you cringe

I do not see how that is annoying or you are just not old enough to know. If someone says K Reg I automatically think 1992-93. It was basically just a language that you knew.

because if you aren't old enough/enough of a car nerd to know it instinctively then you have to look it up, an utterly pointless exercise given how the human race has a perfectly good and well accepted method of establishing how old something is.

Or you are just too bone idle to learn it. It is not that difficult.

Watch this video and just think how far BMW have fallen. Modern society car culture in a nutshell.

People just want a badge now, they don't care when it's **** and doesn't live up to the older versions. As long as it says "BMW", or "Audi" and has an iPad on the dash. They can even use Peugeot parts and get away with it :/

Have you actually driven any of these cars you continually have a go at?

Saying it’s k-reg has no benefits over saying it’s actual age. It’s pointless.

This isn't about what is and isn't pointless. This is about what is cringe and what isn't.

Saying K Reg isn't cringe it is fact. Just because people do not understand it doesn't mean it is pointless either. I do not understand quantum physics but it is not cringe.

It doesn't take rocket science to realise that BMW's range is massively diluted by bean counters. The top end 5 series up is still great but everything below is proper cheap now.

I don't agree at all. The current 3 Series for example is IMO without question the best 3 Series they've made since the E46 some 20 years ago.

'Daily' used by people who don't have an exotic sports car in the garage and therefore no need to clarify that the car they drive is in-fact a 'car'.

I love how hard you oppose this incredibly widely used and largely inoffensive term. :D

The car you use for commuting and chores, as opposed to for leisure and weekend driving. The daily! ;)

I do find it funny when people refer to their one and only car as their daily though.

'Runabout' - An even more annoying version of the above. 'Yea I just use it for going to work, the shops, etc'. Oh what you mean like the way 99% of people use... a car?

'M Lite' - Just no

'Pulls like a train' - what, you mean it takes absolutely ages to get up to speed, tops out at about 80mph but can pull really heavy things? Is that what you mean your 535d does? Really?

Agree with the rest. What is an M Lite? Sounds stupid.

"pulls like a train" always makes me chuckle. I know what people mean when they say it, but its fairly nonsensical. Unless they are selling a cummins powered tow truck perhaps.

Its particularly good when people use it to refer to cars such as a 1.4TDI Polo, which is slow no matter how you look at it. But because its a diesel... Pulls like a train m8! :p

It’s cringe to me (and clearly others).

Yep, some the "high end" stuff is still ok (if fugly) like the proper M cars and AMGs. But the rep mobiles and run of the mill stuff is sold on the badge alone.

I can't think of any reason why I'd buy a 1 series over one of the other hatches. RWD was a plus, but even that has gone now.

Priced to sell is the worst.

AS OPPOSED TO WHAT JOHN - PRICED NOT TO SELL? PRICED TO KEEP? PRICED TO HAND DOWN TO YOUR GRAND KIDS?

AND NO JOHN - THE FIRST TO SEE WILL NOT BUY YOU MORON.

This. This all day long

One for me is not so much specific terminology but people who can't tell the difference between "immaculate" and "fair condition" when selling their cars.

I've recently spent some time with the new 1 Series - it's actually a decent car. It's nicely put together, it has a decent interior, the infotainment system is decent and it has a decent engine range. Despite being FWD, which I am not a fan of, it still drives well and it was unique in its class having RWD previously anyway. Now, it's the same as the rest of the class. It's a better car than the previous one in most respects. There are many reasons to buy one beyond just the badge - it's a decent product. I suspect you've never so much as set foot in one. It isn't a car I'd ever buy as small hatchbacks are not my thing, but that doesn't mean I can't see the appeal.

Even the 'rep mobiles' are fundamentally good cars - there is a 320d on every street corner but you know what? It's an incredibly good car - the better engine models are far better for the driving enthusiast but the basic car remains unchanged even with the 'rep' engine in it.

I appreciate I am seen on here as quite the BMW fan - but there is a reason for this. More often than not, they make really great products. They are not perfect and are prone to slip ups, especially in the styling department (Honestly, I dread the direction they are currently taking), but generally they make great cars which drive well, work well, have a great range of engines, are good to drive, have great user interfaces etc. If they didn't then I'd drive something else*

*Like I will be if they continue down the current road styling wise.

And a new 1 series it's about 32k+ if you add options and it'll still be mundane. I'd rather go and buy a Yaris GR instead. Or save some cash and buy a Focus ST (or used RS). Because well...they are better cars.

RWD is premium and FWD is not. BMW is meant to be a premium brand.

I do not blame BMW either. Audi have gotten away with it for years tarting up VW's. You can stick to your morals and die off or you can adapt and survive.
