Not sure why people are surprised by Nintendo anymore. They have sat on their hands for the past 2+ years and still sold millions and millions of consoles. They have sat on their hands and still sold millions of copies of a 7 year old game (MK8) and quite a few of the best games on the Switch are still ports from the Wii U. Its basically become a ports console with the occasional triple A game on it if you are interested in a particular IP.

I doubt we will see MK9, another Mario (like Odyssey), Bayonetta, MP4, Pikmin 4 this generation. BOTW will come out for the end of next year despite it leaning very heavily on the current engine, assets and world and despite BotW coming out over 4 years ago now.

Nintendo has repeatedly dropped the ball this generation when it comes to games and many other things and just seem to laugh as people lap it up. They are like an awfully run company that just seem to make more and more money every year and no one can really see why.

Barely touch my switch in the last 4-5 months, i completed ni no kuni on it then bought pokemon shield, played it for a couple weeks then stopped. Tried zelda breath of the wild thought it was okay. Need to find something else, i do like the look of the next metroid game though.

There are many amazing Metroidvanias on the Switch.

You could probably buy 4-5 of those for the price of Metroid Dread, and I’d be very surprised if Metroid Dread is up there with the best of those games based on the last free 2D Metroid games.

I don't really equate dropping the ball to the Switch which is literally a licence for Nintendo to print money at this point. You could use those words if the Switch was another Wii U but it isn't.

The irony is that BoTW was actually a Wii U port, the sequel will be just more of the same.

They have created a console that perfectly fits in with a lot of peoples lifestyles and it has a lot of good games on it. They didn't expect it to be anything like as successful as it was which is why they suddenly came out with "Bayonetta 3 and Metroid Prime 4 guys!!!!!" when they had barely even considered starting development on them. As you say BotW was ostensibly a Wii U game, MK8 is a Wii U game, DK tropical freeze is a Wii U game and probably 40-50% of their AAA games are ports from the Wii U.

I am not a fanatic console gamer but has there ever been a console that relies so massively on ports, remakes and indie games.

If you took the ports and remasters off the system you would kill it.

Nintendo are a weird little Japanese company and they still act like it despite the Switch's success. They are very very frustrating and it feels like they treat customers with a high level of contempt. They still haven't fixed joycon drift. Their OS is something that would have been **** in the early 00's. Their online is a joke. They charge full price and sometimes more than first time around for lazy ports of old games.

If the core Switch concept wasn't so useful and there weren't so many good indie games on it I wouldn't still have it.

But those points are only relevant if you bought all those games on Wii U. The vast majority of switch owners haven’t played them or even know anyone who had a Wii U.

Think of the Switch as a portable refresh of the Wii U that also plays cross platform indie games and doesn’t have that stupid controller. That’s pretty much exactly what it is in a nutshell. It’s not like this is some kind of secret, Nintendo haven’t hidden these games are re-releases.

All these re-releases were always a part of the plan and that much is entirely clear. If the switch didn’t have these games, they’d have a handful of first party games to play. That wouldn’t matter if they sold 15m units or 80m units.

It’s no different to other platforms these days, (other than the % of first party games). The PC is constantly getting remastered versions of old games. I’m literally playing Mass Effect Legendary Edition right now.

I figured from the last 100 posts that a Switch 2 / Switch Pro isn't happening any time soon.

When Nintendo does finally announce a new console though, what's the best way to pre-order 1 and beat the scalpers? A group of my friends all wanted a PS5 last year, and only 1 one of them managed to get it in the end. The person that got it was on Argos' site in the early hours of one September morning, something like 2AM and there was a short window where pre-orders were allowed. His pre-order went through ok and it arrived on release day in November. The other 5 friends are still on PS4s in mid-2021 because they missed that window and have since been priced out by scalpers.

So I was hoping to go down the Argos pre-order route as well for the next Nintendo unless there is a better way? If there was a short pre-order window, where would that information come from?

I think there should also be a system where you can prove how many hours you have put into the existing Nintendo Switch. Under profile settings, you can see how many hours you have put into each game. I easily have over 200 hours on my games combined. I also have 3 amiibos linked with some of the games, so a bit of investment there too. If that data could also be linked with my Nintendo account, then that would prove to the retailer that I'm a genuine Nintendo player who just want 1 unit for myself and not someone who intends to buy multiple units to sell at mark-up.

I purchased a USB to Ethernet adapter to use with the Switch dock to speed up downloads.
Download speeds still seem slow, does anyone know if I have to disable WIFI in order for the switch to use the ethernet?

Microsoft has a nice system where you can buy a new console through the store on the old console itself.

Bit of an edge case, you'll probably have to try to see if it makes a difference.

I'll echo the discontent above. Big N are coining it with Switch with an apparent low effort approach. Such a shame, my switch probably won't come out until the BoTW asset flip comes out

Made very little difference to my DL speeds. I think the only real reason to get it is for a more stable/low latency connection for the likes of Splatoon. I think Nintendo have just put a junk chip in it. They don't care about online and I think this is just symptomatic of that.

Surely that's the definition of a very well run company. They are projected to sell more consoles this year than in 2020. They have a good product, some very good games and appeal to a large audience. Not very hard to see why they are successful.

Exactly. You may not like it but the vast majority of those who bought it so, hence the high attach rate for the switch.

In my view a well run company doesn’t expect a poor outcome on a new product and then when it’s an unexpected success do the bare minimum to keep the gravy train rolling.

Well run companies would take advantage of their huge sales to release more new games, do new things and push boundaries and try to make their product better. Nintendo have done none of this. They are just as likely to have a rubbish console again in 10 years time as a great one IMO. They got lucky with the Switch and don’t seem to have learned from it.

They've hardly done the bare minimum.

They have a massive catalogue of AAA first party games that most people did not get to experience. So of course they are going to port them to their new successful system. Its good business. Not spending too much money to make a shed load of it.

People said that with the NES, SNES and Wii too. For a company that is run on luck (your words) they sure do have a lot of it.
They are releasing as many games as their competitors, if not more id say, you may not like those games but you can't turn around and say they don't have a vast catalogue.
