Zandvoort
When was the track built?
Like Silverstone, Zandvoort was first opened in 1948, part of the wave of post-war motorsport enthusiasm that swept across Europe. Originally made up of a mixture of permanent track and public roads that snaked through the sand dunes of the Zandvoort resort town, the Dutch Automobile Racing Club – who initiated the plans for the circuit – brought in 1927 Le Mans winner Sammy Davis to consult on the layout for the original 4.2km track.

When was its first Grand Prix?
Formula 1 arrived in the Dutch dunes in 1952, with Alberto Ascari dominating the race as he led home a 1-2-3 for Ferrari. Formula 1 would go on to race on and off at the track until 1985 – before, in 2019, the announcement came that the championship would return to Zandvoort for 2020, after a 35-year hiatus. The Covid-19 pandemic meant that became 36 years and a 2021 date.

What’s the circuit like?
‘Really quick’, ‘pretty insane’, ‘crazy’ and ‘old-school’ were words used by the current crop of F1 drivers when asked to describe the Zandvoort track that many of them tackled in their junior category days. We’d also add ‘undulating’ to that list. The Zandvoort track swoops and flows through the sand dunes, creating a rollercoaster-like feel to the lap. And while the circuit will be modernised in time for F1’s 2020 return – including increasing the banking angle at the famous Tarzan corner to an Indianapolis Motor Speedway-trumping 18 degrees – Zandvoort will remain a proper, challenging drivers’ track.

Dreading the crowd in this one already. How long before the first orange smoke canisters are let off?

The Orange Army will behave as long as Maxine looks like he might win... but if Lewis leads I could see orange canisters all over the place...

Considering how Hamilton had their backs for a refund and Max said nothing, it would be a bit rich of them to boo him. No doubt they will. I’d love to see Hamilton win there just to see their reaction.

They're already banned, it's easy enough to see who is setting them off. They really need to start throwing people out and banning them from future events for letting them off.

I suspect they'd boo Valtteri winning too if he beat their precious Max plus he skittled out two RB cars in Hungary so he will be on the Orange Army's Boo List

Kimi Raikkonen has just announced his retirement from Racing

*doffs hat*

Don't expect his retirement from racing will last that long, but enjoy it.

Clears the way for Bottas to go across to Alfa to partner Nyck de Vries (also currently a reserve driver for Mercedes), which then leave a seat free at Mercedes for... I don't know... Umm... Alonso? Rosberg's return?

Didn’t stop the crowd at Spa when the “race” ended :p

Thanks @Shimmy for taking the time to prepare these posts, it is appreciated.

Spa, what a mess, not so much the weather as it can happen, just the whole, 2 laps behind a pace car, usually considered exploratory laps not an actual race! Anyway an all time low.

Zandvoort, the name is synonymous with F1 lore, its great to see it back although the new circuit is nothing on the original. This is one of those days that I would like to have had Sky to watch Friday Practice.

I cannot imagine an F1 running around the new circuit, its such a small track, and overtaking? I hope we get a race this time and the crowd behave.

Off on a tangent, sad to see the iconic Grandstand has been destroyed, same as Le Mans which flattened the iconic Media Centre not so long ago, same with Silverstone as well. When you watch the film 'Grand Prix' and the buildings from 1965 remain at Monza to this day.

Serious question but tyres have been tested fine on the banking?
After last weeks debacle we don’t want anything else to go amiss……

Really looking forward to this, finally getting to watch my first Dutch Grand Prix live, after the long delay imposed by the pandemic as well.
Should be a pretty exciting and unpredictable race, it’s that kind of circuit. And I don’t often hope for no rain, but after last weekend, hopefully this one will be dry!!

And soon Valtteri announces his move to Alfa... and George to Merc.. it's gonna happen

It happened months ago. Just contingent on Kimi making the public announcement. Also expect Albon to Williams, and Piastri as the Williams reserve prior to a race seat in 2023 after Latifi is out of contract.

It's going to be a weird track. The circuit map makes it look extremely tight and twisty, a bit like Shanghai, but with the banking the apex speeds will be relatively high. It might even promote some close running, as alternative lines should be easier.

I'm more used to the Grand Prix Legends layout (1940s-1980s) and haven't seen much running there since the big layout change in 1999. The first third of the lap is the same though, expect for any banking changes.

The banking doesn't last that long, it's far from Indy and this is smooth asphalt, not the diamond cut surface of indy either.
The Indy 2005 race would have been fine too if Michelin had been told about the surface type changing and been able to prepare accordingly.

Bridgestone had prior knowledge due to Firestone having done thousands of miles of Indy 500 and associated testing.

Zandvoort will be fine.

Ugh Netherlands and Dutchies ;)

Track looks very narrow. Probably going to be a procession. Mazapin will spin and bring out a SC.

A rogue wave flooding the track might make it interesting.
