It looks like a British Club racing circuit. This weekend is going to be a procession unless it rains and I predict absolute chaos on lap 1. And probably at most restarts for multiple safety cars.

It is more BTCC than F1! They can't overtake these barge F1 cars on half the tracks as it is and this one makes Hungaroring look like the M6!

Zero run off anywhere as well so we'll have plenty of safety cars.

It has banked run offs too, so cars are going go off, hit the barrier then roll back down on the track.

Assen was better suited in terms of width and run offs, but was too free flowing for F1 and would have annoyed all the MotoGP crowd as F1 tends to make a mess of the braking areas.

It looks like there are a lot of unprotected armco barriers around the track, or merely covered in sponsor logos boards with no additional protection. I hope that isn't a factor in years to come, either of bouncing cars back out onto the track or another Grosjean-type accident.

Seeing that, I'm very surprised it's FIA Grade One status.

Vettel loses an engine right at the start of FP1 - his third of the year. Looks like he'll be taking a few grid drops towards the end of the season.

There seemed to be some issues with the fire extinguisher he used to make sure the car didn't go up in flames. The marshals also seem to be a bit... useless, frankly. The car has been parked at the pit exit for 15 minutes. This doesn't bode well considering there's expected to be a few safety cars in the race.

*Edit* - it seems it's because the battery hasn't discharged yet so it's not safe for them to touch.

Now that they have shortened the sessions the whole red flag procedure is a bit daft.

You could have crashes in every FP session that could result in no running at all as the clock continues to count down.

Interesting that Anthony Davidson, Merc sim driver, was expecting lap times 2 seconds slower than they actually are. Seems that the Merc sim model of this track may not be too accurate. That may go some way to explain why Lewis doesn't bother doing too much time in the simulator.

I can think of a few times where they've suspected electrical issues but never to this extent.

Safety first, always. Just after last week I've been itching to see some cars go around in anger

Or Ant just isn't as fast as Lewis and Valteri and that's why he's just a sim driver

"Those who can do. Those who cannot, teach sim"
True, however he's not going to be 2 seconds off them. Also sims generally lean towards being faster than real life due to the lack of consequences for stepping past the limit.

I cannot remember a time previously since the hybrid era started where a car has been unsafe to touch or work on so it’s a first for me. Normally that car would have been on that truck in a couple of minutes.
There's been a few that I can remember (although I can't specifically name them), but it's normally a 5 minute delay at most.

Perhaps I should have included ‘that took this long to recover’.

Two very obvious points from FP1

Qual session 1 will be carnage - 20 cars on a 70 second laptime... Penalties coming for loads of people for blocking etc.

Second point - going to be almost zero overtaking on this track. Looks cool to drive, but literally nowhere to overtake at all.

I'm annoyed about Spa as that's a nice track. Robbed. :( Awarding points for that is also ridiculous. This track is going to be all about quali and luck because I think there will be a safety car at some point making strategies difficult. Overtakes for position will be minimal. It's going to be a snoozefest.
