Upgrading sons PC

Well I managed to buy one and so did my brother and a couple of friends also managed to get them. If I recall you even brought one yourself but sold it on for a big profit :p

The 5800X recommended to OP would be a very nice pairing although I ran the 3080 with a ryzen 5 3600 with minimal performance loss at 1440P for a couple of months before getting a 5800X.

I did and quickly sold it, the performance was terrible. I’ve been trying to get another for testing.

IIRC you got a pair to mine with.

Maybe you had issues with your PC then because most people who get them think the performance is excellent.

I only have one FE card the other I got an AIB at release and while they are both in my PC right now it will be going to my lad when I build him a PC for his birthday.

Depends what CPU you pair the RTX 3080. And lol at being able to buy one for £649 the chances are almost zero.
I got one. Since then managed to get 3090,3080ti, 3070ti and 3060ti(last fri) in my basket... Cant buy them as already got one, but its like a challenge now, can't stop trying

Keep going, I couldn’t believe what the 3080 sold for. Kind of felt bad TBH. I haven’t had any luck since.

Probably because it's one per customer to make it fair for those who haven't bought one before else you would have the same people buying them to scalp every drop.

I don’t think the 3080 has been a available since. The 3080ti was briefly available but the 3080 is hot enough so didn’t fancy it.

3090,3080ti and 3060ti dropped last fri... Had the 3060ti, but actually wanted it this time rather than just challenge, as my son asked whether he could have a pc(he'd stump up £500 he's saved) bal for b'day and Xmas. Thought if bought in my wife name, it might be ok, but same delivery address blocked it. Did phone and ask how a 15yrs old is supposed to get one as he cant afford his own home, going to school and everything...lesson learnt, Grandparents will buy it next time, though 3060ti sell out so fast going to be hard.. Didnt bother with other two.. .. Anyone check how long before they sold out(last drop was 1hrs and a half for 3090)

What did you go for in the end?..apologies if went went off subject by end

Still looking at the spec listed by Joxeon, got a bit side tracked yesterday so haven't ordered yet.

Is it worth upgrading the graphics card or should the 1080 Ti still be fine?

Cheers

Jon

The logical upgrade would be a 3080 but with AIB models costing around £1100 it's just not a price worth paying and the only card worth going for is the FE @£649 but you need alerts set up and some patience, luckily the 1080ti is still a very good card so you don't have to be in a rush to replace it.

1080ti....goes to 2070ti....goes to 3060ti...thats how i look at it(though 3060ti is slightly faster from reviews)

As Joxeon above says, its still a great card. The benefit of the modern card is ray tracing ability (you'll have to go 3080 or above really) and dlss which will give you another fps boost
AMD FSR though will give you same boost though few games support it at the mo.

Looking on ebay seems 1080ti going for £400 odd, so i would say if you can get a founders edition of any, 3060ti/3070ti/3080 its worth it... 3060ti 20% uplift(but you have ray tracing and dlss) and its £369, so you can sell your card for more.. In future 3060ti will be worth more than the1080ti so from a financial point of view its worth it.
If buying a non fe card, stick with what you have.. Dont think cost of change is worth it at the mo

No, it would be the most illogical upgrade.

OP, the 3080 is rather power hungry and doesn’t conform to industry spec. Nvidia pull dangerous amounts of power and produce incredible amounts of heat. This isn’t a product like the 1080 and you need to build a system around the card. Even forgiving the issues with the card the performance isn’t anything to write home about either.

You also need a very highend Ryzen 5000 system to get the advertised performance. The RTX 3080 isn’t a drop in and forget product for casual users.

The GTX 1080ti is 250w the RTX3080 is 320w while also being over 80% faster, if your bothered about power draw you can undervolt it so it pulls 250w and it's still over 75% faster.

You don't need some huge fan filled case either, I have a small case with 3 intakes and 2 exhaust a 5800X and 2 RTX 3080s, so when gaming + mining that is around 700w and my FE runs at under 70C.

Cool, so a 500watt PSU, MATX case with a pair of 140mm fans should be fine.

You should know full well what the issues with the RTX cards are.

People fit these into ITX cases so case size isn't an issue as long as you have reasonable airflow.

Nvidia recommends 750w psu for a 3080 and 600w for a 1080ti so no, a 500w psu wouldn't be good for either but anyone with common sense would likely check the requirements or ask on a forum like this if they are unsure.
