We're going to Edinburgh for a couple of nights at the end of the month, Friday and Saturday night, staying at the MacDonald Holyrood hotel.

Just looking for restaurant, bar, nightlife, places to visit, etc, if anyone has any recommendations please? Many thanks in advance.

We were there a few years ago for a long weekend, and I particularly remember the restaurant Twenty Princes Street, not far from North Bridge, the food, service and ambience were all really good.
The narrowish street behind the restaurant, Rose Lane? or Rose St? had a few enjoyable pubs in it, also a street off North or South Bridge, possibly Blair St?, had a few good pubs in it.

christmas shopping, putting christmas decorations up early and listening to christmas music whilst drinking some thing from a can that contains a very high alcohol content.

maybe nip to Glasgow for a smile

As its now dark proper early I'd be tempted to head towards the castle and look over the Xmas markets... great view.

Proposed to my wife in front of the castle with the very same view ... cheese fest

Thank you, much appreciated.

Is that what you've been doing tonight, or what you'd recommend I'd do in Edinburgh?

I was thinking that the Christmas market could be worth a look, and the castle too, thanks. Cheesy but awesome at the same time.

Walk up Calton Hill, nice view. Check out Leith, a number of good restaurants and bars. ‘Panda and Sons’ and ‘Bramble’ are the best cocktail bars in the city. Both new town. Latter doesn’t do reservations.
Dishoom is good for dinner and cocktails if you like Indian.
During the day, Camera Obscura is actually pretty fun! Bus tour I guess. The Meadows is nice. Get a toastie from Mellis, best cheese toastie you’ll ever eat.

Oh, forgot about the Guildford Arms. Great ale pub, beautiful inside!

We're going at the end of this week actually. Really looking forward to it. I've booked Dishoom for breakfast on my wife's birthday, but still need to find a dinner place.

We've booked a tour of the underground town thing, a trip to the castle, and a highland day tour for the Saturday. I think we'll probably going to the National Museum of Scotland, maybe the Camera Obscura as @Ahleckz suggests, maybe the National Portait gallery as well, but I also just want to wander round and see what's what.

Does anyone have any other dinner recommendations? Japanese food would be awesome...

Oink. You have to go to Oink.

Otherwise, walk and see where you end up. Edinburgh city centre is small enough that nothing is very far away. You could walk to Leith and mooch about on the Royal Yacht and then pop into Mimi's bakehouse for cake.

There are some very good organised tours in Edinburgh. I was a bit sceptical about them but did a couple of the Mercat ones, "Secrets of the Royal Mile" and "Historic Underground". The latter was better but the former included entrance into the castle.

It's difficult to be bored in Edinburgh.

If it's nice weather walk up Arthurs seat and along Salisbury crags....great view over the city. Palace of Holyrood House also. I liked walking around grassmarket and then over to New Town(walk up Victoria Street then down the royal mile). Such a difference is styles with windy narrow streets on multiple levels to the regimental streets of newtown..The Malt Shovel on Cockburn Street just off the royal mile if you want to try a whole load of whisky's. Been a fair few years since went to uni, last time I was back pubs etc had changed, but such a great city

Go left at the ice cream van and take the easy path though. I went right and did the scramble which was a mistake!

The deli at the top of Cockburn street does really nice haggis samosas.

Haggis supper at the Clamshell.

Haggis samosas...I want one.... Also other bars..in grassmarket we used to go to 'The Last Drop'(where they used to do the hangings), and the White Hart Inn, then on the royal mile, Deacon Brodie's....these are some of the oldest pubs in Edinburgh. Feeling a bit nostalgic now:cry:

I spent a night there weekly for a year with work.

Best restaurant was Dussit on thistle street (Thai). Otherwise loved the craft beer scene with Fierce, Brewdog, Innis and Gunn and more

Hakataya in Rose street, amazing home made pork broth and the hell ramen is to die for!

There are a few places to eat in the Grass Market.

Random suggestion. If you or your other half are fans of Ian Rankin or the Rebus series then pop into the Oxford Bar on Young Street. https://goo.gl/maps/5NTSiE1k8hMkYW9Q9 I went there a couple of years back before a holiday and since the missus is a rankin fan (favourite author) we had to go as its referenced in the books and they filmed there as well. Its just a typical old mans pub and when we were there there was a bunch of students spouting a load of crap like they were the worlds most intellectual bunch while nursing their half pints and gin n tonics

Since you're going at the end of November, Christmas markets will be in full swing and you can eat your bodyweight in bratwurst, pretzels and mulled wine if you so wish.

If you like asian inspired food then check out
Tattu or Chaophraya.

If you want a decent cocktail or whisky and a bar with some atmosphere then have a drink or two at The Devils Advocate.

Make sure you book in advance and avoid the Grassmarket.
