You missed the big “ANY CARS that have been lapped by leader will be required to pass the cars on the lead lap and the safety car“ not just the ones that make it easier for max to overtake on the restart
That any cars comes AFTER the part where ‘the message will be sent out’ that message was not sent out, so the rest of the rule doesn’t apply.

So the rule that Masi ‘broke’ isn’t really covered. The rule says
‘"If clerk of the course considers it safe to do so, and the message "LAPPED CARS MAY NOW OVERTAKE" has been sent to all teams, any cars that have been lapped by leader will be required to pass the cars on the lead lap and the safety car."

Those words never appeared on the official messaging system so the rest of the rule is the ignored.
Now they need to decided if there is a rule that allows for only x amount of cars to pass under the safety car.

"Any cars" = all lapped cars. Plus the Safety Car was supposed to come in on the next lap. Masi brought it in on the same lap to give Max his chance, or else the race would have been finished under Safety Car.

I can't see the FIA saying "Yeah you know what, you're right Mercedes - let's do a reshuffle"

I think this one will go to court...

The problem is, there is no rule that says just a select few cars can unlap themselves, because that would obviously be a totally ridiculous and unfair rule as it would advantage some cars and disadvantage others.
Exactly, whichever way you consider it letting just 5 cars pass and in a relatively uncontrolled manner was crazy and has never been done before.

What a mess!

I can't actually bedgrudge Max for lucking in so much, he certainly couldn't have done it on his own and whilst that sours it a bit, well, stuff happens.

Not sure Merc are doing themselves any favours protesting, take it on the chin and keep it classy, then see what you can do next year.

you’re missing the point. Did the message in all caps go out? No, then the rest is not relevant.
The rule is clear
If…
Then….

the if was not met, therefore the then does not kick in.

but the rule Merc are appealing doesn’t apply as that message didn’t go out. So nobody can say that rule wasn’t followed.
Is there a rule forbidding an amount of lapped cars unlapping themselves?

Well then you are in a stupid situation where the race director can literally make up anything and it would stand! Can't see that holding up in court.

Your argument, is that Masi could have just (as a flippant example) told Lewis to not go over 150mph or get a penalty. There is no rule stating otherwise right?

They are doing what any business would do. They’ve been treated pretty unfairly. As for the championship, I said in Baku that Hamilton’s brake magic incident would cost him.

The whole argument is that, the rule you quote was ignored.

It should NOT have been ignored at all, it should have been followed to the letter, from the start to the end of that rule.

Not made up as you go along.

And you think Horner wouldn't have done the same? You are deluded.

Come it was hilarious hearing Toto's crys to Massi on the radio. RB tend to try and argue their point. Toto didn't argue anything.

I think they are both as bad as each other and we should hear less from both of them, but Toto's crys were particularly funny in that moment.

Well as per me showing the if..then part of the rule not being met, what rule was broken?

The question is whether the race director has authority to come up with his own message and completely bypass the rule that determines the procedure.

Does all this mean the teams can now run any type of engine, aero, tyres next year they see fit as rules can be changed on the fly? I can see it now, Mercedes arriving for practice next year with a V12 6l twin turbo, NOS, with massive wheels and a massive rear wing.

In doing so though, would have sacrificed track position to Max.

At the end of the race especially, that's basically throwing the race away, Max would have stayed out and then it's up to the individual whether they think Masi would have pulled the same stunt to give Lewis a one lap run at Max with a huge tyre advantage.

Mercedes made the only logical choice at the time.

The VSC was similar they'd have given up track position and be forced to try to overtake a Max with 'nothing to lose'.

Yea, they had no choice because BOT was nowhere near the front to give them other options.

The whole "lapped cars must overtake" rule has always annoyed me. Takes so long and you end up with 10%+ of the race under SC - not saying what they did today was right, just think that whole situation could be handled better.

And you think Horner wouldn't have done the same? You are deluded.

Horner would have also blown a vessel for sure. As a spectator of the sport, I'm loving this season and I am very happy with the new champion. People looking for shadows in corners of light is where I find it gets funny.

Plot twist. Masi to get 5 days notice, Max 5 seconds time penalty for being slightly ahead under SC and Lewis getting 5 sec penalty for gaining slight advantage by going off the track at start of the race. :)
