It's not about dragging anything through the mud. There are contracts at stake, precedents to be set. Lawyers will need to straighten it all out and decide if the regulations are worth the paper they're written on.
 
The stewards say the race director is allowed to control the use of the Safety Car, and taking the results from the penultimate lap (as Mercedes requested) "is effectively shortening the race retrospectively, and hence not appropriate.
 
This is the end of F1 as we know it. Max is champion but only until the courts rule that the FIA broke their own rules.

You can't just do that. I cannot believe that this has even happened. Huge disbelief and I feel absolutely gutted for Hamilton
