This quote from Iain Banks - Use Of Weapons always springs to mind

“Zakalwe, in all human societies we have ever reviewed, in every age and every state, there has seldom if ever been a shortage of eager young males prepared to kill and die to preserve the security, comfort and prejudices of their elders, and what you call heroism is just an expression of this simple fact; there is never a scarcity of idiots.”

Great quote.

I know Ukraine has military service but there's a good argument for having the right to bear arms, or at least have some formal weapons training, as a citizen of any country.

To go from a 9-5 office job into combat in the period of a few days must be terrifying for the Ukranian men.
Civilians in Ukraine have been able to carry since last year.

Yeah I'll give that the airport seemed the main target but can't deny the use of the youngsters, it also makes sense why they've failed most of their objectives too green to fight, such a shame what a waste of life

This is a complex war, the world is watching, Russia so far have been as toothless as the sanctions, he's gotta be holding a whole lot of stuff back so the West cannot get intel of their true combat capabilities and miltary doctrines ? Or has the whole world just overestimated their power beyond the scope of having nukes ?

Its kind of like Putin harping on about his great arsenal and hypersonic weapons. Half of it could well be bluster, equally Ukraine has little high tech of its own, so many of these capabilities aren’t worth using. It’s a different affair if your going up against the US where some of the tech capabilities that could get by missile defence for example could be of use.

So you support the return of national service, it would be a great way to deal with the knife crime in this country give those kids a purpose and some discipline.

Cliched but ultimately so true that if you want peace you need to be as prepared as those who desire war.

Not small state is it?

I'd also say with the limitations on recruitment that a lot of those people would be ineligible anyway.

World could do with a bit of Culture right now.

Another factor I suspect is that Ukraine is still getting high level intel - allowing them to blunt Russia's advance somewhat and/or avoid battles which would exhaust their manpower and resources for limited effect - or at least I hope so. It will make a huge difference in managing Russia's push into the country if utilised properly.

National service would 100% solve a lot of uks problems with knife crime, drugs and a whole raft of other things

should have been done a long time ago

Valve should shut of access to steam, EA to EA, Microsoft should close off CoD, Xbox access and deactivate every copy of Russian windows. That would ruin their youth almost instantly

US going to ship in another $600m of arms. Must be US seeing Ukraine holding Russia back giving hope.
This is good, earlier there was talk in the US that they should cease helping because if Kiev falls and they end up effectively arming a resistance then that would make "the US a legal co-combatant target". If they're now talking about sending them half a billion dollars of offensive weaponry then that's great :D

From the perspective of giving people the confidence to defend their country yes, but there may be other benefits like reducing thug culture. It could be one of the reasons why some European countries are so placid compared to the yobs in the UK.

NBC news report saying some Russian forces had surrendered due to not wanting to fight Ukrainians. They had not known they were going to fight Ukraine. Also reports 30-60k Russian troops currently deployed and moral is low. Sounds like they are being forced to do something they don’t want to.

The US should sanction World of Tanks and World of Warships, would soon bring the Russians into line :D
