They had time to start brining in planes if that was their goal...

Nah, you'd need to properly take and surround the whole airfield and approaches. Not enough time for that, airplanes would be sitting ducks - especially if filled with troops.
They'd want it for that purpose to get troops on ground near capital in long term but short term they need a base in land for helos and armour to re-supply when it gets there. Without it the armour supply lines look very precarious behind them...

Problem is we're not really getting information on their tactics, we're getting third hand (at best) reports about what the Ukrainians say they're doing. This is the problem with "alt news" sources.

In example, we know that a bunch of Russian special forces took an airfield, then there was a battle, a massive explosion, and they ran away. Ukrainian sources say they took back the airfield and now Russia can't fly in troops/etc. But do we even know if they wanted too? They had time to start brining in planes if that was their goal, maybe their orders were to blow up the runways (the massive explosion) to prevent the west flying in help, and then escape (in which case 100% success).

I hope the Ukrainian story is true, but a lot of the news/facts being paraded ATM is just hearsay.

Yeah we aren't getting the full picture - but quite a lot of videos out there at least in that footage Russian tactics seem dated - weirdly power and communications are still active over a lot of Ukraine so far.

I wonder if they would have let me leave or make me stand and bang? (Had I flown on Monday)
**** I've just realised, I was planning to fly to Russia in October for a budget "Drink vodka, drive a tank, fire an RPG" holiday, I guess that's off the table now :(

*EDIT*

On second thought, if I fly to Ukraine they would probably let me do all that for free xD

As soon as this is over I'm going to ukraine

I refuse to go to Russia if putin is in power and am coming to despise the people who have kept him in power through apathy for so long.

Which makes no sense, if they wanted to blow up a runway they'd simply bomb it/hit it with missiles, not ferry in a bunch of light infantry on 30+ helicopters (losing 3 of them in the process) and have them hanging around being filmed by CNN...

True, but he will just lock every single one up etc and I doubt he cares what any of Russia's citizens think
I think he wanted more support from the population than what he is getting. Talking about Ukrainians being cousins etc. yet none of them want Russia there. I have some Russian friends that think Putin has lost his mind. They have relatives in Ukraine and Putin’s view on Ukraine is not the reality.

Ensuring ones own safety seems like what most people would do first of all. Contacting family or friends to say bye seems like the next obvious choice.

Maybe she has got to somewhere she feels as safe as she can in that moment. I mean its not like they can jump on a plane or a train and get out at this point. They are stuck in a war zone. I can't imagine how hopeless that must feel, no where is safe and moving probably feels dangerous as hell.

Goading the west into a fight?

This had knock on effects as it has been used for Space parts hasn't it ?

Sheesh looks like I was maybe right about Putin's phase 1 being the expendables to probe defences

This quote from Iain Banks - Use Of Weapons always springs to mind

“Zakalwe, in all human societies we have ever reviewed, in every age and every state, there has seldom if ever been a shortage of eager young males prepared to kill and die to preserve the security, comfort and prejudices of their elders, and what you call heroism is just an expression of this simple fact; there is never a scarcity of idiots.”

I know Ukraine has military service but there's a good argument for having the right to bear arms, or at least have some formal weapons training, as a citizen of any country.

To go from a 9-5 office job into combat in the period of a few days must be terrifying for the Ukranian men.
