That picture isn't of bombing BTW - aircraft, possibly Ukrainian, shot down by air defences - I'm not up to speed on the latest details as to which side did which.

Yeah I've already removed it after reviewing it, it was a SU-27 that was shot down yesterday.

Looks like the defenders in Kyiv still have plenty of NLAWs - which should help their chances a lot if they can keep organised effectively.

If you had read any of the military related threads in the last 10 years you think the Russia military was modernised with badass supermen for specials forces and unstoppable hypersonic missiles. When it comes to action time it seems their airforce is using any old junk they can find that's still working and there not so special forces getting routed and humiliated on one of the first missions of the war.

They are not even in the top 10 economies of the world. I doubt they can afford much better in all honesty.

I wonder if there are plans to vastly increase the US presence in Poland, I'm sure there's an options paper about escalating somewhere.
They are currently building a huge complex there to forward base a **** ton of US armour and equipment. All the kit will be ready and waiting, all the US will have to do is fly in the manpower mount up and roll out.
Poland is going to be the new Fulda Gap.

It will kill civilians, as most of the troops are around cities. If he uses it in built up areas then it going to be a big problem for Russian's. It will legitimise terror attacks on Russian soil.

Technically they're no longer civilians now they've all been armed with guns

Russia getting really embarrassed militarily if all these reported losses are true, although it could be propaganda, to rally morale, if Russia wanted though with all the artillery they have, they could end it anytime

It seems their biggest issues are tactics. If this was UK or USA they would bombard every military target possible and wipe out every single air defense and SAM over weeks before sending any aircraft in like this!

Damn, that's pretty bad for them!

That risk was why they turned those planes around yesterday after the farce at the airfield. Losing 100+ airborne troops in one go is not great for whichever battle group they were a part of!

Ukraine is potentially involved in talks soon but this sort of thing must be super bad for morale among Russian forces. Airborne forces tend to be split up among different "sticks" and mixed up among different aircraft during a drop so that if an aircraft is destroyed there is some redundancy, it doesn't just take down say the whole HQ Company or the whole mortar platoon etc.. etc.. but rather will have taken down various people from different sub units in that battle group. End result though, everyone among the ones that have successfully landed will have lost some mates on that plane.

I wonder if there is any truth in this? It was unusual for us to get that much info on what they thought Russia was doing and when they thought it would act. Putin does seem to be a bit desperate in his rhetoric.

I think US and UK intelligence reveals went a long way to knock the game plan - with the kind of composition fielded and approach they've taken I'm pretty sure Russia was hoping to head shot the leadership, use sabotage and uprising by pro-Russian elements, etc. then surround cities which were cut off and disorganised but the reveals took the wind out of those sails and probably prevented some of it happening.

Yep, i just don't think they have the capability.

I think the issue there is Ukraine getting top level intel - was able to avoid the worst of those initial strikes.

Technically from what we've seen so far they appear to be attempting to copy our 2003 Iraq tactic. I.E rush like mad to the capital, take it, install your own caretaker government and declare the war over, then say anyone still fighting you is an insurgent and so has no Geneva convention protection.

It's just a mental invasion plan. The whole pretext is saving the Ukrainians from the imagined tyranny of their government. So they can't go in after weeks of airstrikes devastating the military but also civilian populations they're there to 'save'. It's like they thought (and still think) the Ukrainian people would rise up and greet them as liberators.

They've gotten this very, very horribly wrong. I really hope it brings about the downfall of Putin. He's gotten a lot of people killed for his little pet project ego trip.

edit: think they've probably used the majority of their cruise missile capability as those things are pricey. Even the Yanks have limited numbers. Airspace seems to have lots of AA about still, victims of their own brilliant sams so bombing limited. Little wonder they're desperate for the airfields.

There's more NATO troops being sent to the Eastern Flank.

This is from yesterday from Nato's Sec. Gen. Stoltenberg:
"The presence of nato troops in the eastern flank has been significantly increased.
In the coming days, more troops will come in the eastern flank."
