Apparently the nuclear special alert is Liz Truss’ fault

She does appear to be putting on a bit of an aggressive front imo. Trying to be another Iron Lady.

Funny thing there, not that long ago Russia were saying that "nobody pays any attention to the UK" and "nobody listens to anything the UK says anymore" etc,

Now they're saying they're gonna pull nukes out, all because of Liz Truss :D

She's getting ready for a leadership contest once this settles down

"I will not name the authors of these statements, although it was the British foreign secretary." Great job on not naming them
Yes, she's used the whole situation to position herself as leader in waiting.

It's a pretty horrible show of ambition.

I can't take her seriously after the EU/cheese speech.

Astounding that someone like her is in the position she is in.

So it was genuinely liz truss that triggered this talk of raising the game?

Russia are obviously looking for excuses to escalate. But liz, please don't help them along!

They will try but Russia still has air superiority so it will be tough for them. it didn't take Russia long to destroy what they originaly had,
I wouldn’t quite say they have air superiority either. At least not yet. Seems they didn’t take out all the Sam sites so trips inland are not without a lot of danger. Unless that’s changed recently.
Helos will have a really bad time of it with all the shoulder launched stuff in there.

Be interesting to know if Russia is self sustainable on wheat production, or that now massive sanctions have hit they simply can't go without eastern Ukraines farm land to try and feed Russia.

Edit looks like in 2019 they were the 102nd biggest importer at $46m, so not huge amounts

Russia have just killed loads of civilians in Kharkiv, horrible videos on twitter with dead bodies everywhere

It's almost as if Putin forgets we're in an instant media generation and these pictures are going all over the world including inside Russia, if the pictures are really gruesome I see support from all side melting away,

I'm not sure how a middle ground can be found in these peace talks.

Ukraine would have to be prepared to give the 2 contested regions to the Russians, but even if Ukraine accepted that - surely Russia will want a lot more?

The issue here is that Putin is going to be humiliated whatever happens. So why not bring out the really heavy ordnance and just blow up lots of things/people? The footage from Kharkiv is not pleasant.

Russia is one of (maybe the?) biggest grain exporters, so they are self-sufficient, I'd assume.

I don't think they need Ukrainian land for food security.

Ukraine is also a huge exporter of grain, and that could be a big issue for world food supplies, generally.
