I think this is far more likely that people think and are being led to believe. And I don't think it's about, nor will it lead to Armageddon either.
We Europeans have been brought up thinking about and being worried about a strategic nuclear war, where each side, having used the mutual assured destruction premise and deterrence, basically says "**** it" and presses the reset button. Everyone loses. That's because Europe was always perceived as the battlefield between East and West.
The US and Russia don't see that as the full picture. A far more likely scenario is the use of theatre or tactical nukes. Smaller warheads designed to be used against hard targets and as warnings to the other side that things have got real. European powers really don't like this concept for obvious reasons and a lot of non-proliferation talks and treaties have been about controlling their development and deployment. Needless to say, the Russians have 1000s of them.
