If it ever got that bad in Russia, I'd imagine the same sort of arrangement we have with North Korea - they get some necessary food and humanitarian aid in exchange for not testing any more nukes or whatever. If their government does something they've been told not to then the aid stops for a while.

There's not really a good alternative.

Sucks for the people subject to the repressive government, but the alternatives are either enabling their continued bad behaviour, or engaging in a devastating war with political consequences which would rock the world.

I'm not sure it ever will get that desperate for Russia though, unless they do something that severely annoys China.

Guessing the US is having a good look at what is going on around Odesa - multiple ISR aircraft and drones up over eastern Romania.

Indefinitely in my opinion else we risk it looking like we are just docking somebodies pocketmoney for a week.

Actions have consequences. The people then need to take that up with their government, no matter how hard that might appear. This isn't on us - its on Putin.

Punishing the people of Germany didn't work out well after WW1.

The west may not be able to interfere militarily but we could play Russia at some of its own game with cyber attacks. I believe Anonymous managed to take over a Russian TV network for a time, more actions like that where they broadcast the real damage the Russian military is inflicting on Ukraine could help cast doubts on what state tv is telling them.

If they take it up with their government they normally end up in jail or worse

How will they control 11 million population of Moscow going nuts say 5 million of them stormed government buildings?

They are talking about martial law now so they are worried of this happening.

When Putin finally takes Ukraine and occupies it, it will drag on for a long time.

How long do we keep the crippling sanctions that will be ruining innocent Russians lives? At what point do we start realising we could be causing a poverty and humanitarian crisis in Russia?

Stopping sanctions is essentially a free pass to invade the next "bit of Russia" he fancies. The sanctions should stay indefinitely to limit military build up or until a less blood thirsty leadership comes to the fore.

probably millions of Russians will die before putins gone.

whether it's from economic sanctions/starvation or a civil war.

There's no way the oligarchs and putin go quietly, they probably know if putin goes they are probably dead men walking

This is quite amazing. Their country is being bulldozed by these guys, yet the people tend to them and provide food. We really could learn a lot about compassion from these people. We are literally making it illegal to seek asylum, and these people are sharing what little they have with the invading force.

I've been to Ukraine, and I have family there (Unfortunately, they are estranged and I have no way of contacting them), and the people are incredibly kind and hospitable. It's cliche, but true.

Edit - How the hell do you embed?!

What is happening to the jets they were going to sent? Without air support and ground to air defence Ukraine is screwed. Is there any plans to have air support and defence? My feeling now is just a matter of time till the rusky husky lusky completely dominate what they want.

Russia is completely self-sufficient in food, there is no reason to think they'll starve.
depends what happens when inflation really kicks in surely?

a massive amount of people will probably find themselves with no money, no jobs and reliant totally on the state to distribute food and supplies.

I bet there's already empty shelves happening from panic buying

What is happening to the jets they were going to sent?
looks like everyone changed their minds or they do it secretly somehow and hope Putin doesn't notice

That's missing the point. If Putin didn't feel like he had to attack the rest of Ukraine in order to annexe Crimea, then why would he feel like he had to so in order to annexe Donesk and Luhansk?

"it was different" is not the same as "it is different". It isn't, the only reason there's been a different reaction from the west is the invasion of Ukraine itself and the build up beforehand.

And if "of course Ukraine would try to take them back" then why haven't they tried to take back Crimea?

Of course the truth is as always nuanced, but I don't think there's much, if any truth that Putin would in any way feel like he should have to apply attrition to Ukraine to do either or any of these things and that POV is supported both by Putin's disregard of the Ukrainian military so far during his "special operations" and that Ukraine made no attempt whatsoever to try to reassert their sovereignty over Crimea since the Russians pulled out, which they did within months of taking control back in 2014.

This is not about just taking Donesk and Luhansk.

Because he was forced into action in Ukraine as threats were not sufficient to get the concessions and agreements he wanted. Therefore he escalated to direct action, Luhansk and Donetsk are merely a convenient 'reason' for his 'necessary' invasion of Ukraine. If they government wouldn't comply under direct threat then direct action was necessary and this was/is being sought by way of regime change.

He would have then got the government of Ukraine to agree to his demands, will have got the added buffer of Luhansk, Donetsk and that would have been it. This was never some precursor for attacking NATO or anyone else, but simply yo protect the Russian racket. He needs buffer countries and borders to do so, can't have Russian population looking at comparative prosperity and democratic nirvana across direct borders or him and the Russian overlords would be finished. The uprising and enlightenment that was being realised in Ukraine is what they feared, not NATO which is simply a vehicle for his 'the enemy' propaganda.

it's not propaganda to suddenly re-brand thermobaric explosions to "vacuum bombs" ?

should call them what they are instead "fuel air explosive" but I guess that's not as terrifying in peoples minds.

from a quick google using custom dates, seem the wiki page got updated fairly recently.

i must admit, whilst i'm aware of the term "thermobaric" as it applies to munitions, this past week is the first time i've heard of them being called vacumn bombs.

unless it's maybe a case that a translator perhaps used it as a direct translation (maybe not knowing english term and just translating directly) and the media picked up on it and ran with it?

Incredible how this *********** has the courage to say this:
World War Three would be ‘nuclear and destructive’, warns Russia’s foreign minister Sergei Lavrov

Does he think he’s going to live or anyone in the world with a ww3 based on nuclear weapons?

Exactly this. A prospering Ukraine becoming Westernised and having a better quality of living than Russia would have been a major threat.

Vlad picked up the phone and said no, Its a step too far

Russia wont keep blowing planes out the sky forever while other countries can give them a supply of replacements unchallenged.

I mean, both the US & Russia are in possession of enough nukes to end the world a couple of times over, each. There comes a point where having more than the other guy becomes a bit pointless.

There are no winners here, from young Ukranians dying and losing their country, to young Russians dying and seeing their economy implode, even to people here seeing their cost of living go through the roof.
