You could buy the following at B&Q which would help:

* Wood to board up windows
* White paint to help reflect the flash
* Wood to strengthen your shelter under the stairs (usually the safest part of a house)
* Bucket and sand to put out fires
* Bucket to hold water for drinking
* Shovels and crowbar to help extract yourself from a house that has collapsed around you
etc

And some rope to hang yourself :D

That's assuming the debate about "nuclear winter" vs "nuclear autumn" turns out to be like Ferguson's covid modeling on the nuclear winter side, because if not we're mostly all going to starve in the event of a massive exchange of weapons and what remains of humanity could easily be sent back several centuries in terms of development.

Oh yeah. That's the real problem. If you bother to do anything you should keep in mind the difference between trying to actually survive and making what short days/weeks of misery you have slightly more tolerable.

First thing you should do on hearing the warning is fill your bath with water. Then at least you won't die of thirst and you'll have something to ease the hangover from guzzling the scotch.

Has anyone here taken any precautions and started to make preparations for an eventuality if nuclear war was to take place? Had a quick look and did not see a thread for it discussing what kind of things to buy etc.

if the nukes drop I hope one drops on my head, at least I wouldn't feel it.

Your initial concern is going to be surviving the blast of the bomb - this is mostly down to how close to the detonation you are. If, like me, you are quite close to a primary target, you are probably not going to survive the blast - in which case you are better off trying to anticipate action and get the hell out of dodge 24 hours before it happens. This obviously doesn't work for a surprise first strike but if Putin drops a nuke on Ukraine that's a good sign to bug out.

If he nukes Ukraine and only Ukraine there isn't even any guarantee that it will spread into a wider conflict - NATO won't open fire on Russian first and Ukraine isn't a part of NATO so there would be no retaliatory strike. Having said that, I wouldn't take any chances and would get the family on the first boat out of England as it would only take a small percentage of the Russian nuclear arsenal to turn our entire country into radiated glass.

Where to go is the next question - Ireland for me probably as I have family there and hopefully their neutral status and almost negligible armed forces would give Putin other more important targets to aim for. Or Iceland. If you can get south of the equator, that's a good call too.

Preparing or this kind of eventuality involves liquidating all the assets and cash you can and turning them into useful items for trade. Gold and Silver coins are good when cash doesn't matter, as are medicines like powerful painkillers and antibiotics. Build a bug out plan and bag. Get a clockwork radio so you can listen to broadcasts - the phone networks and internet will be gone. Get solar battery packs for small devices that you need to keep 'just in case' - a kindle with ebooks on field medicine and survival for example. Get a hand held Geiger counter, water purification kit and proper field first aid kits.

Make sure you arm yourself too - and be prepared to use it. The biggest danger to you post apocalypse is other humans.

There is more, but I'll let others chime in as it's an interesting subject.
