It appears he is happy that it hasn’t become a war with the countries applying the sanctions.

I honestly think he is a smart man and he does not want WW3 but he very much wants a legacy and he wants to make Russia great again but in his mind to do that is by power so a great large modern army, nuclear fear and he wants to restore the USSR or parts of it at least. He may actually have some genuine fears and no nation is an angel all have skeletons in their closets and all have used force at times when gathering around a table could likely have avoided it.

The West does however need to show strength though the recent unity has certainly showed strength in a big way as lots of small countries combined also means there are a lot more heads together all thinking how to out smart the enemy.

I hope some of the allies Russian countries can try to push Putin more into talking and peace talks because what is happening is not the answer.

Ukraine people deserve their freedom and their country and the Russian people should not be made to suffer, it’s just all so sad and wrong on all accounts.

The problem is the propaganda war and of a resolution is not found soon the end result is just going to be a real hatred between West and East fueled by propaganda but proven by people dying due to war and people suffering due to sanctions.

Loads of (I assume younger. wealthier) Russians are leaving the country apparently, the ones that are left will probably just suck it up and accept their new world. Russians do suffering very well.

Apparently the plan was to occupy within 3 days and install a new government, all this fighting is unexpected and basically he doesn't know what to do now.

The only way out for him is to be able to claim a great victory and that the Ukraine government has had a rethink. But I don't think he can even do that, a lot of Russian armour is stuck in Ukraine and can't get further in or further out. The Ukrainians are going to capture it all. Nato et al think they've got this. Russia can not continue with Putin in charge.
