Interesting piece on the progress of the war, it's written by an Emeritus Professor of War studies so I'm assuming it's a reasonably reliable analysis. It's long but the key points are: the Russians are in big trouble, and Putin may be starting to look for a way out.

We are left contemplating the psychology of the man who launched this catastrophic adventure and must now decide whether to call it off with whatever face-saving claims he can muster. We wonder whether when he claims his war plan is on schedule and is meeting its goals is a continuation of his past delusions, because the sycophants around him don’t know how to tell him the truth, or because he does not know how to admit to the Russian people how badly he has let them down, especially after he has gone to extreme lengths to hide the truth from them. He is now engaging in more conversations with international leaders, the latest being with Israeli prime Minister Naftali Bennett, so perhaps he is starting to look for a diplomatic way out.

It is possible to slide away from defeat by claiming victory against more realistic goals. After all Saddam Hussein led Iraq into two disastrous wars – when he invaded Iran in 1980 and seized Kuwait a decade later. At the end of both, with nothing to show for all the consequential death and destruction, he nonetheless claimed victory because somehow, he had personally managed to survive in power. As Putin is forced to move away from his maximum aims will that minimum one also come to be his priority?

On the one hand talks with the Israeli PM seem to be pretty serious which would be an odd move if he wasn't looking for something from them but the cynic might see it as trying to capitalise on it to legitimize his anti-Nazi rhetoric.

I so hope that is true. It's hard enough seeing parts of Ukraine I don't know being destroyed, once/if they start on Kyiv and places I know (as I'm sure others do too) it will be incredibly difficult to see.

This is the beginning of almost demonising people using gas etc.

The wealthy are able to take the hit and probably look at alternatives, because, well they are well off.

For most people, we are going to be smashed with traditional energy prices, but it wont be looked at with empathy, it will be frowned upon eventually. Mark my words.

No help will be incoming, this is the future we all want. Either suffer financially, or become a good person for the greater good and pay for "a greener" solution.

I know this is technically off topic, but it all adds in. We need to suffer financially for the greater good? Sorry but what is that? Energy firms making an absolute killing?

I can't afford an EV, but fuel prices are going to massively reduce my spare income. Obv elec and gas will hit me hard too, but guess I have to get over it? I've seen people suggest EV cars can be cheap around 20k etc.. lol cheap at 20k.

This is really for another thread but the elephant in the room is cost of housing its far too high but won't be allowed to reduce because the banks depend on it.

It is a large part of the problem for the people I alluded to before.

Probably need to take a second or third job then.

I'm pretty depressed anyone would make the last few posts you have seriously or trolling. There is enough **** in this world without needlessly adding to it.

Whilst obviously the Ukraine situation has some impact, perhaps the topic of energy prices and why people should just get 17 jobs and UC top ups to afford to heat their homes could go in the energy prices thread?

I heard people saying they were better driving their petrol and diesel cars rather than their EVs because it was cheaper than the electricity. Sure once fuel goes up that may no longer be true but come October it may be again.

Its all relevant if we need to pay our own more benefits and need to afford that how can we afford to take on additional responsibilities of thousands of refugees.

20K cheap, i paid 2500 for my car in 2013 in an auction and still have the same car.
I think due to covid it is still worth about 1500 today 9 years later.
That was what i call cheap.

The problem going forward is people like Nige Farage taking it upon himself to be for all those that dont want "green".

Making it a binary and polarising topic that will no doubt turn into a us and them camp.

All those that can't afford it will be right wing gas loving planet killers and... poor working class.

The righteous will pick the anti Nigel stance of well, the planets best interest... but more importantly... able to afford their Tesla and private EV charging point in their garage. It's obvious it's going to go down this road.

Your answer has just been given

Probably need to take a second or third job then.
