Where are we on the SMR tech? Are they at a stage where it’s nothing more than a pie in the sky tech or do we have a chance of seeing them quickly, at least quicker than building another few giant nuclear plants?

edit just read https://world-nuclear-news.org/Articles/Rolls-Royce-on-track-for-2030-delivery-of-UK-SMR

anyone in the know, can/will this be accelerated? How would the public react is an SMR is built near them?

Edit probably the wrong thread to be fair, should probably post in the energy thread.

It's entirely of our own making, we should have been investing in Nuclear in the last 20 years but we let the eco hippies dictate policy and now we're screwed.

renewables aren't enough for our needs, they'll always be a short-fall, you been brainwashed

You've literally just answered your own argument, lol ;-)
Nuclear power isn't a long term solution in its current form, but it's a good 'medium term' stop gap whilst the world re-adjusts, and to be fair the developed world should aready be ahead of the game on this, but we, like russia have corrupt politicians who are happy to do dirty deals for the short term rather than thinking about the long term... they have elections to win, don't you know?

Brain washed indeed, hahah :D

Just watch how fast europe knocks up new nuclear powerstaions after this :D
UK too hopefully, but we're almost bankrupt due to said brainwashed voters voting conservative.

Yes we do. We have a number of ways. Google thermal storage and salt for a crash course.

Not on a national scale that can immediately meet demand changes on the grid that’s easily implemented now. Sure, there are plenty of theoretical small scale solutions. That said, if we had started this years ago we could have avoided this mess.

Totally agree.
Also micro generation is the way forward, highly localised power generation is the way to go, for the long term.

The next 5G mast debate on steroids IMO. I think they would make sense to co-locate with already deadly fuels e.g. petrol stations, especially as they convert to charging-station-cum-coffee-shop.

Yet in the UK, if you sell for example, solar power back to the grid, from your house, you don't get anything near like the market rate per KWh. That needs to be resolved, and is another example of corruption and cronyism.

UK has announced they will phase out Russian oil and gas by the end of the year
I can only find a reference to oil is there an announcement about gas as well? The west must be hoping this is enough to force Putin to agree terms so we can all go back to being 'friends' in time for next winter....

SMR is still vapour ware - RR should be more concerned about loss of titanium supply.

Did Boris/truss/preti embarrass us in parliament

Hopefully he will come out and say he has an agreement with Eastern European countries to supply Ukraine with fighter jets and their available immediately.

There are people who are now dying of thirst in Mariupol because they can't get fresh water supply's and the Russians won't let the civilians leave. God I hope Biden for one in his 50+ year career comes out with something substantial and meaningful to help these people who are on the brink.

Biden has done nothing at all....

UK gas price futures have gone parabolic today, hitting £800 per unit at one point today. It used to average around £35

Energy prices are going to be brutal.

I suspect 'the great correction' is imminent, it's long overdue anyway, expect new nuclear plants to be commisioned post haste, along with a massive surge in renewable.

The USA, like China, don't really need to get too involved, when it comes to the crunch they are somwhat self sufficient. they can sit back and watch the fireworks. Once that's over, they will 'come to the rescue' for a price. And to be fair, it's the only sensible thing to do, given thier position.
