That's why Harry/Will were stationed in the middle east and why Andrew got injured in the Falklands. I would take those reports with a pinch of salt.

I mean, these guys have conducted many many jumps previously, it just sounds very convenient from a Ukrainian PR point of view that everything goes fine for the Russian paratroopers in training but when they actually get to combat both their primary and reserve chutes fail.

From reports, Russians don’t fetishise war like people in the west do, it’s a last resort or forced upon people in poverty. They aren’t signing up for mother Russia, they have no choice.

They have no choice because instead of investing in their country their leaders decided to abscond with it's wealth instead and also spend far too much of whatever they do have on a police state.

I don't think I can adequately describe my pity for these poor souls who know no better and have no other opportunities than to be cannon fodder for someone's egomaniacal ********.

Indeed, at least when the US were gunning down journalists in the middle east they had the "can't distinguish between a camera and an RPG at that range so just gotta start blastin" excuse, the Russians are just firing on anything they see :(

If the lack of flight hours for combat pilots is anything to do by, then i suspect these guys have had only the minimum required jumps at jumps at Para school and thats it

There have already been videos of Russians where the parachute hasn't opened. So it does appear to have happened. We've already seen all the videos of the state of all of their other equipment, no reason this isn't true either.

THey dont pack their own chutes? I thought that would be absolutely basic training.

no they just grab a random one from the old USSR stock pile that someone in 1940 packed.

Not quite from the start, initially it was to go for the "quick win" by either being welcomed as the liberating force or taking Kyiv and the major cities with little resistance. It was about 5-6 days in when that didn't work they reverted to standard Russian tactics of just flattening everything in front of them.

Why?

Jump into combat with a pre packed chute discard and start to fight, a paratrooper ain't going to repack his chute and carry it around on the off chance a particularly challenging hill decent might appear.
